SNOW is falling to the Valley this morning in Hakuba! It looks as if the snow is here to stay as the weather maps show low pressure after low pressure systems coming across from Siberia. The snow began falling in the valley at around 5:00 am this morning as the snow line slowly made it's way down from the 1200 metre line of yesterday where quite a bit has accumulated.

GORYU reports 30 cm of new snow on top of past 10 cm base. No comment on when they will open other than as soon as they can groom.

HAKUBA 47 reports that they don't have much snow on the runs yet and it is still too early to say as to when they will be able to open.

HAPPO-ONE reports 20~30 cm of new snow at the top of the gondola and they will open as soon as they have enough to groom.

TSUGAIKE reports 20 cm of new on 10 cm of past base. Again they are unsure as to when they will be able to open, yet will open as soon as they can.

CORTINA reports 5 cm and don't see opening before next week end around the 10th.

The consensus is LET IT SNOW and that each ski hill want to be the first to open. So if they CAN then rest assured they WILL open. With the snow the way it is coming down I would not be surprised to see they large hills open a top area by the week end.

For you who are jonesing for some turns remember that the Goryu and Happo gondolas are loading for sightseeing and they will no doubt let you take your skis up with you so that you can hike and rock bash like a champ. With the present snowfall you should have at least 40 cms of snow to play on, but remember that's not much when there is no real solid base under it other than a few cms of past snow and the dirt and rocks below that.

See you on the slopes real soon.
