Sunshine trying to peak through broken clouds this morning after three days bringing over 80cm of snow here in Hakuba. The winds have subsided considerably and we are back to light winds out of the Northwest and temperatures a chilling -5 deg.C at present, which is great for drying out the snow and creating some excellent conditions on the slopes today! Main runs will be a bit tracked up from the weekend masses of ski/snowboarders, but should still be some stashes out there and easier to see as the visibility has improved immensely so enjoy!

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m) the 0700 hr. reading is:
Sky: broken clouds
Temperature: Present: -5.0 C
Maximum: -3 C
Minimum: -5 C
Wind: calm
Precipitation: nil
Barometer and trend: 923 hPa and rising
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 19 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS):81 cm
Foot penetration: 52cm

Hazard:
Above Tree Line: High

At Tree Line: Considerable

Below Tree Line: Considerable

Discussion:
We have had 19 cm of new snow in the past 24 hours in the valley bottom. This is on top of the 52 cm in the previous 24 hours. Yesterday's winds switched to the east such that they have probably loaded the former scoured slopes. Thus one should be suspicious of slabs having been formed on both apparent lee and windward slopes. There has been significant settlement in the snow pack but the lingering slabs and areas of tension should be given due respect.
As was pointed out yesterday, the moderately dense new snow, high winds and warm temperatures has created slabs in all open areas. With these conditions human triggered avalanches are likely. Skier/ boarder triggered slabs will pose a significant hazard in steep tensioned terrain (Convexing rolls and around trees and exposed rocks), even at low elevations.

Travel Advisory:
I can but reiterate what was said yesterday: with all of the high winds and rapid snow fall from yesterday, slopes are still not stable and travel in avalanche terrain is not recomended. Steep lee slopes should be avoided all together. Shooting cracks were witnessed yesterday in the backcountry and in in-bound areas indicating poor stability. Slabs are deep and will propagate wide in large terrain and will also release in forested areas and chutes. Best advise is to stay to the powder on the piste and soft groomed slopes.
If you do travel outside of the controlled area be aware of the potential of "remote triggering" of avalanches and that the hazard is still "high" above tree line and that a naturally trigger avalanche starting above tree line can easily come to rest well below tree line.
