Brilliant blues skies here in Kiroro today, and this ain’t no April Fool’s Day joke.

Comfortable spring temperatures and almost no wind will make for a perfect ski day.

The resort has officially moved into ‘late season’ mode now with only Nagamine 1 and Nagamine 2 chairs spinning on weekdays from today onwards.

On weekends and public holidays, Nagamine 1 and 2, plus Yoichi 1 will operate.

In case you didn't see this yesterday:

And just like that, it’s the end of March!

It’s been a fairly typical March here in Kiroro with temperatures now consistently above zero and the spring melt well and truly under way. It does feel perhaps slightly warmer this March than in previous seasons, however that may be just in comparison to the particularly cold and snowy January and February which preceded it this year.

My daily snow report seems to follow two fairly consistent formats right now. ‘Glorious and sunny’ (let’s say 30% of the time) or ‘warm and grey’ (the rest!). We haven’t had a huge amount of rain, rather the melt feels like it’s being driven mainly by the warm temperatures. The base here is deep given the great snowfall received in mid-winter, so there is still plenty of snow for the groomers to work with.

From a snow perspective, 179cm of fresh has fallen in Kiroro during March. Surprisingly, we had our biggest snow event of the season on March 3rd, with an incredible 65cm falling in just 24 hours. The rest has fallen in smaller portions, mainly at the start of the month and then again over a week between the 17th and 23rd. Total snowfall for the season is now just shy of 14 metres. Let’s see if April can deliver the remaining 22cm we need to tick over this milestone. Note: the snowfall measurement is taken at resort base level, there has of course been even more snow up top.

On the ground here in Kiroro, life goes on fairly normally. The resort’s loyal season pass holders are still showing up in reasonable numbers, mainly on weekends when it’s not uncommon to see 1,500 people hit the lifts per day, even still. Hotel and restaurant operation has scaled down as it normally does in spring time, just a bit more early and a bit more quickly this year given the lack of tourists. From a COVID perspective, world news suggests that Japan is a little behind the rest of the developed world when it comes to administering the vaccine. However my instinct tells me this is not due to complacency or lack of competency, rather the government developing a very typical Japanese, measured, considered and thoroughly thought through plan for roll out. I expect that once it starts, it will happen fairly quickly and next winter, the world can return to experience the culture, cuisine, sights, sounds, and of course, the skiing in this incredible country.

I will scale back the frequency of these reports between now and the end of the Kiroro winter season (May 5th, weather permitting) to roughly three per week.
