The snow has stopped with yesterdays new snow accumulating another 10cm at the village level and around 20cm on the upper mountains. The wind in the upper mountains was quiet strong yesterday creating large deep patches in sheltered areas of up to 1.5m of powder.

Today is an overcast but relativley cold day with a current temperature of -2 deg C and some moderate winds from the West. The winds look like they will calm down during the course of the day and there may be some more light snow fall tonight.

The on-piste skiing conditions are now great at all of Minakami's ski areas but the backcountry should be approached with caution. There are still many small trees and creeks that are only just covered in the backcountry that make for good traps. Also, there have been a couple of large natural avalanches on South facing slopes in the last couple of days with the weight of the new snow on an old rain crust. The strong winds of recently have created an unstable wind slab on an exposed slopes, and with the dense new snow now sitting on top of this, it is the perfect recipe for an avalanche. TRavel in the backcountry is not advised!

Looking towards the weekend, it looks like warmer temperatures on Friday that will help with the settling of the new snow and should make for perfect conditions on-piste over the weekend. The forecast for Minakami is sunny with some cloud and temperatures of around 2 deg C.
