It's a lovely winter's morning in spring, with fresh powder all around.

Almost as soon as yesterday's post went up fog rolled in, considerably reducing visibility and bringing a stiffer wind and light snow with it. All the lifts kept operating and the wind died down by evening. The roads were pretty sloppy by evening, but at this time of year snow usually melts as soon as it hits the ground and just enough accumulated on the slopes to hide the slush beneath during the afternoon.

The sun is out this morning and it's currently 6º. Around 25cm or so of fresh snow accumulated overnight in the Akakura area and the powder seems to be lasting in spite of the sun. Today's forecast still calls for snow off and on, but visibility is great, there's no wind, and the pistes are uncrowded right now. A perfect day to call in sick and slack off.

Snow was packed on local roads early this morning, but the snow is melting as the sun hits.

It should be cloudy with a bit more snow and temperatures below freezing tomorrow. The weather folks are still forecasting snow every day through Monday next week, with only a blip of warmer temperatures on Friday. The Meteorological Agency's weather chart shows a nearly perfect seiko totei pressure zone pattern of the sort that brings heavy snow in midwinter and the cloud formations over the Japan Sea coast are also the kind that typically indicate snow on the way.

The folks at Suginohara seem to have subtracted last night's snowfall instead of adding it and the good folks at Seki say that they had 40cm of new snow, but their snow depth remains unchanged at 250 cm.
