Winter refuses to go quiet into that warm spring and seems to be working overtime to make up for the lack of snow early on as the end of the season approaches. If this keeps up we'll be skiing until July (local lore has it that August is the only month it's never snowed, doubtless a slight exaggeration).

Looking back in history, the archives reveal that it was still snowing on Myoko at the end of March last year and that Seki Onsen still had six meters of snow on the 12th. But then, last winter was a "normal" winter.

Meanwhile, crocuses are already blooming in the flatlands this year.

It snowed in fits and starts all afternoon yesterday and the wind was gusting, almost turning into a full-fledged blizzard. A few more centimeters fell overnight. Off Route 18, which stays fairly dry because of all the traffic, roads were slippery with packed snow earlier this morning, but the sun has already melted most of that away. This morning's strong winds have turned into mild breezes.

Today, quoting the Akakan home page, conditions are good even though it's March. It's sunny, but temperatures around the area are hovering near zero. There's powder for first couple of runs in the morning, but wax is definitely required as the sun turns things slushy very quickly. Even night skiing was apparently pretty sloppy last night. Visibility is superb except at the very top. No lines for the lifts, either.

Warmer temperatures and sun are forecast for tomorrow morning, but it looks like another low pressure system moving in from the west will bring rain tomorrow afternoon and more snow and lower temperatures over the weekend.

Speed demons may be interested in Madarao's "speed challenge," scheduled for Sunday morning. Kumado ski school is closed today and tomorrow.
