Rain is coming down in buckets at the moment and has been since yesterday afternoon. Kumado has canceled tonight's nighter ski races and postponed today's Slope Smile aerials competition at the park facility until the 21st. It's a fine day for aquatic sports.

It's expected to rain off and on all day and even if it turns into snow overnight as forecast the weekend looks like a washout at this point. All the local ski areas except Seki Onsen are reporting above-freezing temperatures this morning (except Madarao, which hasn't updated it's information since the 12th, perhaps hoping that the rain will go away if ignored).

The wind picked up considerably yesterday afternoon, forcing lift closures. Kumado couldn't open for night skiing, which was probably just as well, considering the awful conditions.

It now looks like sun alternating with rain in the week ahead, with warm daytime temperatures so, barring a major blizzard (not likely), conditions will likely be less than perfect. Finally, local roads are wet and slippery, but not icy and slippery, thanks to the warm weather.

Official resort snow depths:

Suginohara:
100cm
Ikenotaira:
110cm
Akakan:
180cm (at top)
Akakura Onsen:
145cm
Madarao:
160cm
Seki Onsen:
240cm
