Although our friends in Tokyo and Osaka will tell me there's just no comparison, it has been a pretty hot summer for Myoko. Even Lake Nojiri, just across the valley, suffered in the summer months, its levels dropping as the water got sent to dry rice paddies in Joetsu.

Suddenly, though, it's gotten a little cooler, and thoughts turn (still a little vaguely) toward the winter season (reality doesn't really hit until the monster snowblower returns from summer storage).

The ski slopes are brown, mostly from the pre-season cutting to get them ready for the snow. There's not much new this year, apart from ongoing upgrades at the Akakura Kanko Ski Area and the hotel; the new owners have put a lot in over the past few years, and not only in pulling out old lifts. There are a few more English signs and menus around town, but Myoko has pretty much kept its laid-back, friendly style. Which we like.

If snow falls high up on the mountain—and it has happened even in the third week of September—I'll let you know. Now it's just time to wait for the autumn colors, the kind of gloomy days of November (cold rain, gray, no guests in town) and then life comes back to normal. Meaning we ski.
