The autumn colors are already out high on the mountains behind Mt. Myoko, flocks of hiyodori (a noisy jay-sized bird) are moving south across the base of the mountain—no doubt about it, winter will soon be here.

It’s been a quiet, wet summer in Myoko; locals laugh that there was about one real week of summer (and that right after the Obon hoilidays). The fall looks good, though, with some continuing days of sunshine along with the occasional showers.

One of the most welcome news for the coming season is the return of the joint lift ticket for the Akakura Kanko and Akakura Onsen ski areas. There has been some consolidation of the areas, as what used to be the Akakura Kanko Hotel and Champion ski areas combined as Akakura Kanko Ski Resort (or Akakan), and perhaps some local displeasure, because the all-area lift ticket was unexpectedly dropped last season. This left a lot of visitors as well as locals upset (especially after brochures touting the huge area available had already been printed); thankfully, things are back to normal. But, from last year, a season pass for all four major areas—-Suginohara, Ikenotaira, Akakan and Akakura Onsen—-has been available for ¥60,000 through the Myoko Tourist office. Go figure.

Otherwise, some of the older lifts at Ikenotaira have been pulled out, and rumor has it that only the high-speed quads will be running at Akakan (meaning at least one of the high runs will not be accessible). The only worry now locally is that all the moisture got rained out in the summer so there won’t be any left for winter—-but we’re due for a good solid snow year. Keep your fingers crossed; the official opening is December 12, but we have had partial openings in November within the past five years....
