Good morning from Niseko.

The weather is changing as I get this report written, requiring re-writes on the go. Earlier on there was some blue skies to report but it has clouded (fogged?) over quite a lot and quite quickly now. We might even get a bit of snow, though I do not have any to report just now. It's chilly but not cold and fairly mild temps are due in the day. So a bit of a vague report this morning to reflect my confusion!

One thing is clear and that is that it is going to be windy on the mountain with top lifts expected to be on hold.

There is still some snow at times kind of conditions on the forecast over the coming week.

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Mountain Base 6.00am: -0.5°, no new snow, sunny. Moiwa 800m: -6.4°, E2.40m/s, fog. Annupuri 1100m: -2.8°, WSW5.6m/s, snow depth 260cm. Hirafu Peak: -3°, strong westerly wind, no new snow, cloudy. Hirafu 1000m: -3.6°, SSW8.60m/s, cloudy. Kutchan Weather Station: -3.4°, E2.5m/s, snow depth 87cm, ESE1. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:SSE4m/s. Kamui Cape: S14m/s, pressure 1006hPa, wave 1.5m.

The wind over the seas is increasing, a weather front will be passing through the area until noon and we are expecting a SW snow wind above 800m.

The new snow from 2 days ago has formed a bad crust from a repeated melt/freeze cycle. Cracks on SE slopes above 800m are expected to start to expanding again, increasing the risk of large full depth avalanches occurring. To avoid accidents do not spend time in the valley bottoms.

Avalanches are a natural occurrence and only become an accident when people are involved. Overestimating your knowledge and skills can get you in trouble. Always make the cautious choice.

Although the mountain is moving into spring sometimes winter creeps back in. During and directly after a blizzard do not jump carelessly into steep slopes. Leeward snowdrifts are not yet stable and could cause and avalanche. Have a good day.
