Heavy snow continued through much of yesterday and into the evening. It eased a bit overnight but there's been heavy snow again this morning. We've had up around another 40-45cm since last report bringing the total snowfall over the last 4 days up around 2m. A truly epic end to a great January.
Kutchan smashed through the 4m mark to end up with 4.2m of snowfall for the month of Jan. Up on the mountain it's been in excess of 6m. That's as much or more than many resorts around the world receive in a whole season.
Tomorrow will see a rapid change in conditions though as high pressure ridges out of Asia through to the east of Honshu. This will see the winds turn around more south westerly and we can expect the temperatures to get up close to freezing at the base of the mountain. The milder conditions will persist through to the weekend. Be careful around the village as there's a lot of snow on roofs and many of them will slide as temps warm up.

Current Official Snow Depths:

Grand Hirafu:
Top - 450
Bottom - 260

Niseko Village:

Avalanche Information:

Extremely hazardous avalanche conditions are persisting in all areas of the Niseko range.
All gates will be kept closed, except for gate 7 that is yet to be decided.
The wind shifted northwesterly since yesterday evening and has been blowing at 15-20m/s above 1000m elevation. This time’s heavy snowstorm has made and still developing extremely unstable snowdrifts, building up to 2m plus in the past 48 hours. Highly wind-affected snow is very unstable and easily cracks with a slight stimulation. Unstable snowdrifts are also present in lower altitudes (800m and lower), as fissures running as deep as 110-120cm depths have been observed when stimulating the slope. Even if the weather calms down and the visibility turns better, the avalanche risk remains high for while after. Do not duck ropes to seek fresh lines. Fresh and deep snow can easily be found within the boundaries today.
