No new snow again I'm afraid this morning. A sprinkling of light snow falling earlier on but it hasn't amounted to any cm of fresh snow to report. Cloudy.

But. Things are looking potentially promising for mid week onwards. It's going to get a bit colder and stay there and there's a line up of snowmen on the forecasts which means hopefully we will be getting an early March refresh.

Our little graph near the bottom this report page shows that we have gone without any significant snow for about a week now. In fact here's what we have observed from here in the Hirafu Village area:

3cm snowfall in the last 7 days;
178cm snowfall in February 2014;
1,037cm snowfall since the beginning of the season.

The same numbers taken at the beginning of March 2013 last season were:

62cm snowfall in the last 7 days;
406cm snowfall in February 2013;
1,400cm snowfall since the beginning of the season.

So acccording to what we have seen here on the ground, we're over 2m adrift from what we observed last season for the month of February and nearly 4m behind on the total for the season up until the end of February.

Let's take a look at the Japan Meteorological Agency numbers for Kutchan town.

February 2010: 184cm
February 2011: 142cm
February 2012: 216cm
February 2013: 228cm
February 2014: 130cm

They don't make for such fun reading!

Numbers for the month of March:

February 2008: 38cm
February 2009: 235cm
February 2010: 214cm
February 2011: 210cm
February 2012: 79cm
February 2013: 124cm

As you can see numbers for March vary quite a lot. Let's hope that this year March is more like 2009 than 2008!

Last season we observed a total of 1584cm and the JMA number for the whole season was 1051cm in Kutchan.

As always, note that our numbers are observations from the Niseko Village area near the base of Niseko Grand Hirafu and that the JMA numbers are taken from Kutchan town area - more falls on the mountain. We just mention these numbers every now and again as it's interesting to see how things are going compared with other seasons. I think I have got them all right!

There's over two months left for the lifts to be moving but obviously as spring arrives there's less chance of snow than in mid winter. But we'll keep an eye on these statistics as time continues to march onwards.

Niseko Avalanche Report

Niseko base 6am: -6C, no snowfall. Moiwa 800m: mild wind, -11C, light snowfall. Anupuri 1150m: W6m/s, -11C, no snowfall, snowpack 315cm. Hirafu 1000m: -10C, calm weather, light snowfall. Peak 1308m: NW9.4m/s, -14.1C. Coastal data: Benkei cape NNW10m/s, Kamui cape W6m/s, 1.1m waves, 1019hPa.

The weather is calm under a high-pressure system. No snowfall. Crusty & icy conditions above 1000m altitude. The snow condition may not be the best, but good for hiking the mountain. Peak gates will open from the morning. The areas outside the gates are not within the resort anymore and various risks are always present out there. Beware of falling, hitting obstacles or falling into cracks. The courses are hard packed too and some spots are like a potato field (cluster of small ice balls). Better not overestimate skills, be prudent and ski/ride within the limits. Fresh snow is needed. Do not duck ropes and have a nice day.
