Last night and yesterday brought us some really low density snow. That means real light, fluffy POWDER! Today should be a good one. It is expected to be mostly cloudy with some patches of sun throughout the day. We could also see some snow showers but it isn't looking like anything significant.

Yesterday on an excursion, I measured the snow depth to be over 4 meters in the Iowanupuri backcountry area. I actually ran out of length to measure because my probe wasn't long enough to span the entire snow depth. THe stability looked pretty good in the region. The really light snow had started settling and not been a major factor in anything.

Today is expected to warm up and then temps will start to fall tomorrow night. I would get out there this morning as early as possible. If the sun comes out today, it will make things heavy and ruin the south facing snow. Get after it and have a great day!

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Moiwa base 6am: -5C, 20cm of snow crystals in the last 12 hours, no snowdrift development. Benkei Cape SSW 3m/s, Kamui Cape wave 1.5m, pressure 1017hpa. Annapuri Peak elevation 1308m SSW 4.7m/s, temp -9.8C.
Snowfall: Above 800m elevation at midnight, a weak westerly wind (12m/s) continued. However towards dawn it weakened. A small amount of cornice and snowdrift development. The snow surface is reset with 25cmb-b30cm of soft snow crystals.
SnowPit Data: The 22nd Jan frost layer is at 120cm, the low pressure snowfall from the 4th Feb is at 40cm. Between these layers is compact, well bonded snow.
Hazard Evaluation: Around coordinates E6(Backbowl sidewall), F5(O-Sawa cornice face) the possibility of triggering an avalanche deep in the snowpack continues. Be careful just below cornices and other natural weak points. Generally the avalanche risk today is Low. However don't stop in the creek bottoms.
Caution: Today's snow is fast, beware collisions with trees, ski in control. Around coordinates A3(Moiwa Anbetsu), I9(lower HigashiOne) there have been many people lost recently. Always be aware of your location. Once you pass through the gates you are not in the ski resort anymore.
Gates: Peak gates are exepected to open at 9.30am. Please respect the ski patrols decision.
Have a safe day.
