Good morning from Niseko.

Yesterday was something of a miserable day, as we kind of expected.

Rain happened, and we got wet.

And conditions - wind and fog - kept some lifts from opening for those interested in skiing and snowboarding in the rain. The Annupuri Gondola and Hirafu Gondola both also closed mid-morning, though I believe the latter started up again after lunch.

It's still on the warm side this morning with cloudy and overcast skies at the start of the day, and thankfully it is dry. Some sunshine is expected.

It should be getting colder from around tomorrow night and we after that we should be on the receiving end of a delivery of fresh snow as well. Regular snowfall through into the weekend sounds good to me.

For this morning though, how about some time on the groomers? It's spring snow right now I'm afraid (and don't let anyone try to convince you otherwise!)

Resort specific lift opening news at time of posting (subject to change during the day):

Some lifts may be slightly late opening but otherwise resorts seem to be planning on opening as normal

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base 6.00am: 0°C, snow melt from rain. Moiwa 838m: -1.7°C, NE2.6m/s, snowpack down 15cm from rain. Annupuri 1000m: snowpack 290cm. Hirafu Ridgeline: -3°C, snowpack down from rain. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:NW9m/s. Kamui Cape WSW 6m/s, 1016hPa, wave 0.8m.

Currently we are experiencing a high pressure system, light winds and mountains and seas are calm. Warm air and rain are flowing into the region, below 500m snow melt will continue. Also at 800m snowpack is observed to be decreasing from rain.

Snow surface has 15cm soft slab which will easily catch your skis. From observation, around 800m the general avalanche risk is low, however around 1000m new cracks are forming and the risk of full depth avalanches is increasing. At this time a small surface avalanche could trigger full depth avalanche. These are extremely dangerous because they travel at high speed and over long distances. They are difficult to predict, be aware and take care. Today the weather is expected to be sunny and warm, do not ride the valley bottoms. This is where the avalanches will travel, taking out everything in their path.

The mountain has suddenly changed to spring conditions. Take care of falling into creeks with rising water levels, cracks and small scale full depth avalanches in valley bottoms. Have a good day.
