Good morning from my secret Hirafu base lair.

It is going to be a milder morning, as expected. After a cold start, temps are quickly going up and should get just above zero around lunchtime. That is nowhere near as mild as lots of Japan will be today - see comment below on that. It has been keeping (sort of) acceptably cold so far up here, so conditions shouldn't have been affected much - though we of course want regular fresh refills.

We might even get a bit of snow later on today, though clearer skies are due beyond that over the next few days.

-----

A bit of a recap.

Gates 4, 5 and 6 are now open.

Right now all of the ski lifts of the four Niseko United resorts are operating apart from the top Jumbo lift at Niseko Annupuri and the Country Road lift at Niseko Village (though that latter one is usually rested anyway).

The top Jumbo lift will get moving when there's more snow. With that lift not yet operating, it is not possible to ski or board over to Niseko Village and beyond and so they are advising folk to take the United shuttle bus to get to the other base areas.

-----

On the main NHK news last night they were talking about today being a 'spring-like storm' in lots of Japan with temperatures in some regions hitting what is expected in early April rather than early January. Those are really scary words to hear uttered on 8th January. BUT! It does look like it is just a bump and generally things should be getting back to being colder later tomorrow. These bumps do happen.

Niseko Avalanche Report

Mountain base: -4℃, no snowfall. Moiwa 800m: 2.2m/s 146°, -4.6℃. Hirafu 1000m: 1.1m/s 252°, -8.6℃ . Hanazono 720m: 6.1m/s 201°, -3.9℃. Sea of Japan Benkei cape: SSE6m/s, Kamui cape: ENE7m/s, 1-16hPa, 0.8m waves.

A 994hPa low pressure system is moving across the Sea of Japan and the wind is starting to pick up on the front side of it. Not much snow on the forecast, however some snow clouds could form as the cold airmass flows out of the continent and picks up moisture from the sea. Many people went out of gates 4, 5 & 6 yesterday and have struggled with the thick bush below 500m. The Ski patrol is relieved that there has been no major troubles throughout the day. The groomers conditions is kept in decent conditions thanks to the machine operators, however the off-piste remains bumpy and caution is required when riding.

Do not attempt to ski fresh tracks in the strictly off limits areas. One track left under the rope will lead many others to do the same and eventually increase the chances of accidents to happen.

Avalanche hazard level is low today, however be ware of collapsing cornices in areas above 800m. Large cornices can weigh up to few tons. Beware also of sudden weather changes, over speeding and falling into creeks.

Have a great day.
