Poor visibility this morning here at base with fog engulfing lots of the mountain. Once it clears up though we should be left with a day of sunshine and indeed in some places around the region that is what we got already.

Looking at the different webcams from around Niseko, it's as if they are all in completely different places or some are not updating or something... some show not much of anything at all other than fog, others showing clearer sunny conditions.

Around Tuesday we hope to see the current milder conditions take a turn with cold and snow returning. Interesting forecasts for around mid-week, so fingers crossed it brings with it the decent snowfall that some are indicating.

In the meantime have a good Sunday.

Niseko Avalanche Report

Niseko base 6am: -5C, no snowfall. Moiwa 800m: mild wind, -6C, no snowfall. Annupuri 1000m snowpack 325cm. Hirafu 1000m: mild wind, -7C no snowfall. Annupuri peak 1308m: W4.7m/s, -8.1C. Benkei cape: light breeze. Kamui cape SSW9m/s, 1025hPa, 1.0m waves.

Sunny and mild weather under the high-pressure system. Sea of clouds. The snowdrifts have stabilized and the general avalanche risk is low. The trees are covered with rimes. Loose snow avalanche are likely to occur in south facing slopes as the temperature rises. Caution is required in steep open slopes. Today’s surface will develop into a hoar layer in the future snowpack and potentially become the next trigger layer. Deeper snowpack is stable. Climax avalanches from around 1100m are to be expected early this season. Always stay away from valley bottoms. Cracks are forming and getting larger. Those cracks are the result of the slope releasing its tension and may not slide right away, however sudden rise in temperature and/or rainfall could lead to a climax slide. Cracks are also difficult to notice from above, beware not falling in them. The ridgeline is crusty due to the wind, but the snow in the trees remains good. Beware of hitting trees. All gates are expected to open as soon as they’re ready.
