Good morning from Niseko.

Another fine morning with a real spring feel to it and that is going to ramp up as the day moves on with some very warm conditions expected.... possibly reaching right up to 10C at base.

!!

T-shirts out!

There's some wonky temperatures and perhaps even some snow later in the week. Add to that the news that you hear when you turn on the telly or look at the news sites, existence all feels a bit confusingly bonkers at the moment.

It should be a good day to be chilled out on the slopes though, and I might well just partake myself.

Niseko Avalanche Report

Moiwa Base: -2°, no new snow, frozen. Moiwa 800m: SW 224deg 1.8m/s, -0.8°, no new snow, minor snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: WSW 251deg 5.5m/s, -2.8°. Yu no Sawa 1000m: WSW 250deg 6.2m/s, -1.8°. Niseko Village 900m: SW 224deg 4.6m/s, -0.6°. Hirafu 1000m :SSW 210deg 8.0m/s, -2.1°. Hanazono 720m: SW 232deg 6.1m/s, +1.6°. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: S 4m/s. Kamui Cape S 10m/s, 1019hPa, wave 0.8m.

From observation and data the general avalanche risk is low. All peak gates are expected to be open. Outside the gates is not part of the ski area. Always be cautious. The mountain is changing to spring conditions and daytime temperatures will rise significantly. Block avalanches are likely to occur on cliff slopes and steep gully sidewalls due to smaller full depth avalanches and collapsing cornices. Never wait on steep slopes or in valley bottoms. Cornices break in unexpected places. It is dangerous, for you and people below, to stand on top of them. The groomers will be hard this morning but will soon soften up. Have a good day.
