Good morning from Niseko.

It is a mild and overcast morning.

Rain is holding off, but it's due later on, and it might get heavy. Both in terms of the rate of it coming down and the effect it has on our feelings.

So today an early start is most definitely recommended.

The good news is that we have snow on the forecast. It does look like it will be colder from tomorrow. Let's fresh snow please!

-----

Jumbo Number 1 quad lift at Annupuri might be delayed this morning.

-----

There's less of you reading the reports now. It always happens once the peak of the season has passed. The traffic numbers for December to February this year were pretty huge, though things have cooled down rather quickly since the beginning of March. No doubt the coronavirus situation is having an impact.

It's understandable. I am somewhat upset, but I will forgive the deserters.

But I'll continue with my reports right through until the last lift shuts up for the season which will be... well, the plan is early May. My remit is to cover the whole season from the start through until the end. And that is what I shall do.

Stick with me and marvel at how I try to conjure up enough words for a report each day. It does get more difficult in the last chunk of the season when less is actually happening, though somehow it feels like less pressure.

But, gambarimasu!

Niseko Avalanche Report

Moiwa Base: +5°, no new snow. Moiwa 800m: ESE 127deg 2.1m/s, +4.1°, no new snow. Annupuri 1100m: ESE 121deg 3.1m/s, +1.9°. Yu no Sawa 1000m: SSW 200deg 0.8m/s, +2.4°. Niseko Village 900m: ESE 116deg 2.2m/s, +3.4°. Hirafu 1000m :SSE 175deg 3.3m/s, +1.7°. Hanazono 720m: WNW 306deg 0.9m/s, +3.0°. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: SSE 3m/s. Kamui Cape ENE 6m/s, 1015hPa, wave 0.7m.

Warm air is flowing into the area as a low pressure system approaches. There is also an inversion with negative temperatures in the Shiribetsu river valley. Snow melt will increase as the temperature rises sharply today. From the morning observation the is not obvious avalanche risk, however full depth avalanches on south facing steep slopes will easily occur in the afternoon. All gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrols advice and be prepared before exiting through the gates. Cornices will easily collapse. Remember the March 2000 accident at Tateyama Dainichi Dake where the cornice unexpectedly and instantly collapsed. Keep a safe distance from the edge of cornices.

After the low pressure system passes, the wind and snowfall will pick up and the risk of surface avalanches will rapidly increase. Be careful of a sudden change in weather. Have a good day
