Lovely conditions yesterday on the mountain - great snow conditions, great weather and fine visibility. This all while on the news we were watching people in Tokyo coping with 10cm of snowfall. Obviously they are not quite as well equipped as we are up here, and so it looks like it was causing considerable problems.

Anyway this morning we have a shockingly small amount of snow since yesterday in Niseko - less than in Tokyo! - with just a few cm to report.

Winds are messing us about again this morning though with top lifts out of action. In yesterdays report I remember saying we were in for a few days of 'calm' conditions. Oops! Clearer skies, yes, but not calm with the wind today I'm afraid.

The top lifts at Niseko Grand Hirafu (Ace Number 4 and King Number 3 & 4) are not moving. King Number 2 operating at reduced speed early on; the top lift at Hanazono is also not open. At Niseko Village the top Wonderland Chair is not operating and the Niseko Gondola is operating at reduced speeds. At Annupuri, the Gondola was not moving early on but has since started, but the top Jumbo Number 4 is still stationary. They are reporting winds of up to 21m/s up at the top of Annupuri there.

Wind aside, looks set to be another fine day.

Avalanche Information:

Niseko base 6am: -8C, light snowfall of crushed crystal snow and moderate snowdrifts development. Moiwa peak: NE15m/s, wind-drifted snow is developing and unstable. Annupuri peak: NNE23m/s, -16.5C. Coastal data: NE11m/s, 1.6m waves and 1011hPa. Annupuri 1000m snowpack: 305cm.

A strong northerly wind is blowing in Hirafu side; gates 2, 3 and 4 will be kept closed. Other gates to be determined, please respect the ski patrol's decisions.

Avalanches occur when the conditions are right and are not necessarily dependent to the snowfall amount of that day. An avalanche is not an accident as long as nobody is caught in it. According to data evaluation and observations, hard-slabs are forming in high-walls of the Backbowl (Kozannosawa), Osawa SE faces (cornice face) and Higashione 1000m area and are likely to slide. Avalanche risk is HIGH Do not traverse the Backbowl faces like yesterday. Mountains are not always dangerous but are never 100% safe. The snow is relatively bad; beware of hitting trees. Better not push it too far today; have flexible plans. Never duck ropes!
