Hello once again on this generally overcast and cloudy Monday morning. Just a very slight dusting but no new cm of snow.

There's no snowfall expected over the coming week with generally warm early spring like weather dominating. Perhaps a bit of rain at times but hopefully if that happens it won't be long lasting.

I don't have much else to report really. Moderate wind expected for the day though resorts appear to be going to open as normal this morning with the possible exception of the top lift at Niseko Village.

Over 7 weeks to go! Will we get more snow? I was just looking back over the Niseko Now reports from last season and noticed that we did get snowfall in the second half of March and the last snowfall that I recorded here at base was actually on 11th April. Not a huge amount of course, but we're very probably not finished with the fresh snow yet.

You can of course read through the archives from last season, and indeed going back much further, from the links that you will find at the bottom of this page.

Have a good day wherever you are.

Niseko Avalanche Report

Niseko base 6am: -2C, trace new snow. Moiwa 800m: not available. Annupuri 1000m: snowpack 330cm. Hirafu 1000m: Bad visibility, -4C. Annupuri peak 1308m: not available. Cape Benkei: W6m/s, Cape Kamui: SW17m/s, pressure 1019hPa, wave 1.4m.

We currently on north side of high pressure system and SW wind is moderatly strong. Above 800m there is poor visibility and there is trace of new snow. General avalanche risk is low. All peak gates are expected to be open. The risk of full depth avalanche is increasing in places like Osawa, Kozan no sawa, West side Annupuri, around 1100m. These places have thick heavy snowdrifts that may collapse and propagate fractures to ground level. To avoid accidents ride valley bottoms under these locations and also Mikaeri bowl and Moiwa bowl. In Niseko your freedom to ride out of bounds is protected by Niseko Rules. These rules were put in place to try and minimise avalanche accidents. The number of cases, besides avalanches, where the patrol have to rescue people is increasing. Last night the Mountain Rescue Team had to go and search for lost skiers near Goshiki Onsen. If the number people are entering the mountains without considering the dangers increases, we worry that more of these situations will occur, and soon someone wont be so lucky to be rescued uninjured. Make prudent decisions.
