Yesterday, we saw just a little bit of snowfall. Temps were pretty cold with a maximum of -10 here at Niseko Village and light winds during the day. It's expected to clear up a little bit the rest of the week with periods of some sun and light snow at times.

These next few days should be great to get into the backbowls and explore the terrain around Niseko. It should be a great day to get into the backcountry as well to find some fresh tracks. There are still plenty out there. Have a great day and get some good snow!

For those interested in those official Kutchan snowfall figures that we were quoting last month - if you remember there was 349cm for the month of December 2011 in the end - the number so far for January is 181cm. January 2011 saw 420cm and in January 2009 the number was at 331cm of snowfall in Kutchan. Looking back it seems that the most recorded was a whopping 601cm in 1969.

Current Official Snow Depths:

Grand Hirafu / Hanazono:
Top - 350cm
Bottom - 185cm

Niseko Village:
Top - 330cm
Bottom - 210cm

Top - 330cm

Niseko Avalanche Report:

(Weather status) Niseko base 6am: -10℃, slight snowfall over the past 12 hours. Coastal data: NW7m/s at Benkei cape, 1.0m and 1018hPa at Kamui cape. Annupuri peak: NNW6.5m/s and -16.7℃.
(12hours snowfall transition) Development of snowdrifts is small in all elevations. The snowpack is rounding and stable. Surface hoar is forming in some areas.
(Hazard evaluation) Avalanche risk is low.
(Gates opening) Peak gates are scheduled to open at 9:30am. Listen to the ski patrol’s advice before stepping out the gates.
(Caution) Do not traverse across slopes under cornices in the Backbowl area (coordinate E6) and O-sawa area (coordinate F5). Ski down the fall line, better not ski across a steep slope. Stay away from Higashi-One’s cornices (coordinate H8); they are heavy (200kg/㎥) and unstable. The consequences can be big if they collapse on top of you. Beware of frostbites.
