Good morning from Niseko.

There is quite a bit of cloud around but quite a bit of blue sky too with the sun coming out from behind the clouds and then making appearances from time to time. It looks like we can expect some sunny skies through the day today and perhaps tomorrow too.

Doesn't feel windy at the moment but perhaps more wind later in the day today and tomorrow too.

No given reason but the top lift at Niseko Village appears to be on hold at the start of the day. Other top lifts are looking set to be running as planned.

Niseko Avalanche Report

Mountain base: 0℃, no snowfall. Moiwa 800m: NW 312°1.4m/s, -1.8℃, 15cm snowfall in 24h, snowdrifts are stable. Annupuri 1100m: W 272°2.5m/s, no temp data. Yu no sawa 1000m: NW 310°1.1m/s, -3.7℃. Village900m: WNW 284°0.8m/s, -3.2℃. Hirafu 1000m: no wind data, -3.6℃. Hanazono 720m: SSW 195°0.1m/s, -1.8℃. Sea of Japan Benkei cape: no wind, Kamui cape: SSW8m/s, 1006hPa, 0.8m waves.

The mountain is blanketed with 10-20cm of new snow. A 3-5cm thick crust is present under this new moist snow and the hardness varies with elevation. Skis are more likely to be caught under this crust than snowboards. Be careful. According to observations, tests and data transition, the snowpack is stable and the overall avalanche risk is low. All gates are scheduled to open from the morning.

A low pressure is approaching and making warm air flow in. Small glide avalanche and cornice falls are to be expected in south facing steep slopes. Collapsing cornices are similar to a large bus in weight. Better not jump off cornices. The creeks are swelling and could be crucial if falling in one. Carrying a shovel and a short rope is strongly recommended. Fog is likely to appear during the day. Always check your location. Somebody got lost in Goshiki onsen yesterday.

Cracks are forming at the side of gullies and knolls and are difficult to see from above. Beware. The snow is not bad today. Switch your beacon on and wear a helmet. Have a good day.
