Some surprise snow snuck up on us last night. Looks like about 20cm fell in most spots around here as it came down pretty quickly last night. Since it is Sunday, the resort will be a busier than a usual day today. Today would be a good day to start getting into the backcountry as things are settling down from that wind layer. Cornices are still questionable in their stability.

The peak should still make for good times today. There should be some snow left around there if you do some digging. They were closed for almost 2 weeks, so there are still a lot of preserved lines. The Annupuri bowls looked to have some good snow as I drove past them yesterday afternoon. Jackson's area is also a great potential for fresh tracks. It should be a good one to get out there and explore!

It looks like Tuesday could bring us some snow and then a couple clear days after that. Hopefully we can get enough to make it a deep base with some good light and sunshine. Those are the most ideal days here in Japan. "White snow, Blue skies".

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Mountain base 6am: -7C, 30cm of snow crystals in the last 12 hours.
Japan Sea: Benkei Cape NW 7m/s, Kamui Cape wave 0.9m, pressure 1016 hpa, Annupuri 1308m Peak WNW 7.7m/s, temp -16.5C. Moiwa Peak, no new snowdrift development, 30cm of heavy snow crystals in the last 12 hours. temp -7C
Snowfall: Currently Niseko is sitting between weak high and low pressure system to the east and west respectively. 20cm-40cm of snow crystals have fallen overnight, above 800m snow drifts continue to develop slowly on SE faces. Below 800m temperatures are increasing.
Snow Pit Data: 16 Feb layer: low pressure snowfall, 13 Feb and 4 Feb layer contain dust and dirt from the mainland. Depending on aspect and elevation frost type layers are forming around these layers due to increased temperature gradient
Hazard Evaluation: Leeward slopes 800m - 1100m there is 60cm soft slab above the 16 Feb layer. Around coordinates E6, F5, H8, 35 degree slopes and 40 degree knolls will fracture easily. General avalanche risk is low. The snow is good in the trees.
Gates: Gates are expected to open today at 9.30am. Please respect ski patrols decisions.
Caution: Beware of jumping onto cornice slopes and skiing under knolls. Once you pass through the gates you are not in the ski resort anymore. Listen to the ski patrols advice, they are there to help you.
Have a safe day.
