Good morning from Niseko.

The sun is out and we are due a warm day; perhaps temperatures will reach around 10C in Kutchan.

It looks like there's a wind blowing though with all of the top lifts on hold at the start of the day.

-----

There was an interesting report on the main NHK news last night on the subject of average land prices in Japan last year. It sounds like the average price of land in the rural areas of Japan rose last year for the first time since 1992.

They actually focused in on Kutchan town (ie. here, where Hirafu is). Kutchan town actually saw the biggest jumps in land prices in all of Japan - commercial land prices rose by 57.5% and residential land prices rose by 44%. (!). Those are large numbers.

Niseko, dai-ninki ne.

Unfortunately, in the very same breath they then went on to say how bookings in Niseko (unspecified, I might have just missed a detail) for the month of March 2020 were down about 40%. That will be due to what is happening due to the coronavirus, of course.

While I am personally unaware of all the complicated implications of the price of land and such, the clearly reduced number of people around in the last month or so is already affecting businesses and people directly. That is of course very saddening to hear. In the end something like this does affect us all doesn't it.

It will certainly be interesting to see if things can click back into what used to be normal once we pass the worst of it. In terms of peoples health, well-being and business etc, let us hope so.

Anyway, in the meantime take care everyone. And sorry for the non-weather interlude.

And gambaro!

Niseko Avalanche Report

Mountain base 5am: -1℃, no snowfall. Moiwa 800m: SSE 152°3.6m/s, -1.2℃, clear. Annupuri 1100m: WSW 244°6.4m/s, -3.5℃. Yu no sawa 1000m: WSW 244°8.7m/s, -3.2℃. Village 900m: SSW 202°5.2m/s, -2.6℃. Hirafu 1000m: -3.2℃. Hanazono 720m: SSW 215°8.5m/s, -0.5℃. Sea of Japan Benkei cape: S7m/s, Kamui cape: S18m/s, 1006hPa, 1.4m waves.

A low-pressure system is approaching from the Sea of Japan. A southerly wind is forecasted to pick up. According to observations and reports, the overall avalanche risk is low today. All gates are scheduled to open.

The snow surface is mostly crusty in slopes under 800m elevation, making it tricky to ski. Cracks and holes are getting bigger with recent temperature rise and will grow bigger as the temperature will rise quite high today.

Glide avalanche hazard will rise, better not stay put in gully bottoms.

The groomers are pretty firm during the day. Beware of sudden weather changes.

Have a nice day.
