Greetings from my Hirafu base and today it is going to be a shorter report, as there's really not much to report on.

Yesterday was a truly beautiful day - we'll have one of them if we can't have fresh snowfall - and I for once enjoyed the conditions over at Annupuri. Still waiting for the top lifts to open though... I really want to get up there.

There is no fresh snowfall this morning but it was very cold overnight and early morning which is helping us along in this mild-in-the-daytime-no-fresh-snow period of weather.

It is a cloudy and overcast start to the day today though we might well get more sunshine as the day progresses.

Look to Thursday into Friday for more fresh snow - will we get some rain before the snow? We will have to wait and see!

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base 6am: -4℃, no snowfall and calm morning. Coastal data Kamui cape SSW8m/s, 1020hPa, 0.9m waves. Moiwa 850m: calm morning without snowfall and snowdrift formation.

The barometric pressure gradient is flat. The ocean and mountains are in a calm condition. The general avalanche risk is low.

Today’s surface will become a notable Dec 19-20th layer in the future snowpack.

The groomers are also quite icy; wearing a helmet is recommended.

The Hokkaido bureau of telecommunication did some public experiment on using smartphones to specify locations of people missing in the mountain. This experiment is done in the effort to speed up the rescue operations and there are no doubt this will be a big step for preventing potential accidents.

However, accidents mostly occur during poor weather conditions and require a prompt action. Doubts remain whether drones or balloons would be able to fly in conditions exceeding 15m/s winds at the base of the mountain. Current drones are unlikely to stay under control in snowstorms and would need improvements on its weather-resistancy and battery life. There also seemed to be some misconception on the density of the snow that were used for calculating the transmittivity of the radiowaves. The avalanche debris' density reaches a much higher level compared to the natural falling snow's snowpack and data should have been calculated based on this fact.

Avalanche beacons are now the common equipment for avalanche accident prevention.

This device was first developed during the WW2 in Europe as a way to locate deceased soldiers during the battles in the Alps. After many years of research and improvement after that, they have now become a very useful tool for surviving avalanches.

I strongly hope that this new experimentation would eventually develop into a device to revolutionize the avalanche accident prevention and will make many people survive thanks to it.
