Very cold air moved over the region yesterday and temperatures started at around -7 in the morning at village level and dropped close to -10 in the afternoon. Couple this with the strong winds that accompanied the cold and plenty of falling and blowing snow, conditions up on the mountain were not overly pleasant.
Temperatures are still cold this morning and snowfalls have been moderate at times. The wind has abated somewhat and all lifts are currently running. Conditions up high with wind chill factors will be close to frostbite temps so rug up when heading out.
There has been considerable drifting and loading of lee slopes and the peak gates will remain closed today. Most other lower gates will be open though and there's enough fresh snow so that the hard base underneath won't be too jarring. The powder will be a little wind packed but in sheltered areas reasonably deep and a lot of fun.
Snowfalls will continue on and off throughout the day and over the next couple of days. Temperatures will become milder with lighter winds making conditions a bit easier to handle up there.

Niseko Avalanche Info No.38

Moiwa base 6am: -11℃, 20cm of amorphous crystal/graupel overnight snowfall.
Coastal data: WNW15m/s at Benkei cape, W9m/s, 2.2m waves and 1009hp at Kamui cape.

-15℃ in upper Mizuno no sawa.

According to data evaluations and weather transition, cornices and snowdrifts are slowly developing in leeward slopes below 800m, turning into soft slabs and are easily collapsible.
Pre-Low snowfall “Wakame” or decomposed stellar crystal layer is present on top of Jan 21st layer.
Maximum snowdrifts development up to 1m in knolls and leeward ridgeline around 1000m.
The avalanche risk will remain high in Osawa cornice slope and Kozan no sawa sidewalls even once the storm has clamed down.
Peak gates will be closed, respect the ski patrol’s instructions.
Gate 1, 7, 5 and 6 will open.
Do not stimulate and stay away from knolls and cornice slopes. Don’t stop at the gully bottoms.
Pit checks results are just references, could be dangerous to blindly rely on these results.
