Good morning.

The sun is out and we have blue skies above us. It is a beautiful morning here in the Niseko region.

I do not have any fresh snow to report but it is certainly a fine day to be outside.

The Hanazono lifts did get to open yesterday but after the various wind related lift disruption over the last few days, all lifts that plan to be moving should be doing their thing today.

-----

At Niseko Grand Hirafu, over the next few days they will be putting together their 'Spring Park' - to do so, they are closing the Shirakaba course from 22nd-29th March.

Today is the last floodlit 'nighta' across the mountain.

-----

I don't want to dwell on the subject, but I should perhaps note that the state of emergency that was put into effect by the governor of Hokkaido a number of weeks ago has now actually been lifted.

While they seem confident that the current situation makes that a good idea, they are still asking people to remain vigilant etc., which seems wise.

Niseko Avalanche Report

Mountain Base 6am: -1°, no new snow, light winds. Moiwa 800m:NNW 328deg 5.2m/s, -0.7°, no new snow, no snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: W 274deg 7.5m/s, -3.2°. Yu no Sawa 1000m: WNW 281, 1.8m/s, -4.3°. Niseko Village 900m: WNW 288deg 3.0m/s, -2.1°. Hirafu 1000m : -2.9°. Hanazono 720m:WSW 266deg 1.3m/s, 0.4°. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: W 3m/s. Kamui Cape: WSW 6m/s, 1006hPa, wave 1.5m.

No snow clouds, sunny and a moderate westerly wind above 1000m. Snowdrifts from yesterdays wind and snow has stabilized with a 5cm crust at all levels. From observation and data the general avalanche risk is falling, however as temperatures rise, 30cm surface and full depth avalanches can easily occur on the steep sidewalls of creeks. Yesterday, south face of Mt Yotei around 800m a large scale surface avalanche occurred.

Peak gates are expected to be open following lift checks. Please listen to the patrols advice. There is no powder, but as temperatures rise the snow will get easier to ride. Around 1200m in areas like Kozan no Sawa sidewall, there is a breakable crust which can easily fracture causing surface avalanches. Be aware. From now on the risk of full depth avalanches from just below the ridgeline on protected slopes around 1100-1200m will increase. Full depth avalanches in Niseko are destructive and run long distances. Avoid them by keeping out of the valley bottoms. Helmets and beacons are recommended. Have a good day.
