The latest Niseko Now report can be found here

Good morning from Niseko.

After that thin layer yesterday (and thin it was - alas, soon to be gone!), there's no more fresh snow to report this morning.

We are expecting a calmer day today with less wind with the top lifts opening as planned at the start of the day. I think they remained closed for the whole day yesterday due to the wind conditions at the top.

There is a lot of cloud around this morning and a bit more of a moody feel compared to the clearer blue skies yesterday. But it will probably clear up somewhat with sunshine and temps rising to around +2 at base. Currently hovering around 0.

And now for something completely different (1):

Check this out! On 31st March the 'Old Boy' ski race will be taking place at Niseko Grand Hirafu... boys over the age of 50 only allowed! Apparently, this year is the 44th year of the event. If there are any such 'old boys' reading this and wanting to take part, ask at the resort. Looks like you can enter.

And now, for something completely different (2):

Introducing the SnowJapan Community

We would like to welcome everyone to a new section of our website, the SnowJapan Community:

https://www.snowjapan.com/community

What is SnowJapan Community?

- Any member can post a question (about Japan winter sports)
- Any member can answer questions that other people have posted
- Login/register easily using an existing social media account (Facebook, Google, etc)
- ...or using an existing ‘SnowJapanForums’ account
- There’s a new SnowJapan blog (which will be written by us)

The new Q&A area is a place where people can ask their questions about any aspect of winter sports in Japan. Hopefully, other people who have good answers will respond. Obviously, it will need knowledgeable people to be on hand to provide answers but if it works well it should become a good new source of useful information. Let’s see how it goes!

To read more about the SnowJapan Community please be sure to read the Welcome message.

Some of you will probably remember the ‘SnowJapanForums’. They were fun and useful for a lot of people and we had mixed feelings when we decided to close them in November 2014. It was a complicated situation, but we found ourselves needing to spend way too much of our time dealing with various issues (spam, trolls, people wanting to promote their business, behind the scenes issues, etc). We really wanted to be able to concentrate our energies on our main website.

We need to avoid getting back into a similar kind of situation. So, it is important to note that this new Q&A area is not an open-for-all discussion ‘Forum’ and that all submitted questions and answers will be moderated.

We are hoping to soon allow members to log in to our main SnowJapan site to post ‘Resort Reviews’ and upload ‘Resort Photos’ using the same account details. We’re currently working on that and will post news when that is ready.

There are a few other ideas that we are considering for this brand-new space, so you can expect some changes and adjustments as we move forward.

Please feel free to contribute to the Q&A. We just ask that if you do, please read the guidelines before posting a question or an answer.

https://www.snowjapan.com/community

Thank you!

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Mountain Base 6.00am: -1°, no new snow. Moiwa 800m: -2.2°, W4.30m/s. Annupuri 1120m: snow depth 250cm. Annupuri 1100m: -4.6°, NNW3.70m/s. Hirafu 1000m: -8.7°, N4.4m/s. Village Mizuno no Sawa: -7.4°, WNW4.1m/s. Kutchan Weather Station: -2.8°, S0.8m/s, snow depth 154cm Cape Benkei: WNW6m/s, Cape Kamui: WNW3m/s, pressure 1011hPa, wave 1.7m.

The wind has dropped since yesterday, the snow is stable and general avalanche risk is low. Take note that below 700m on steep slopes and sidewalls near the valley bottoms, small full depth avalanches are likely to occur due to the temperature rise and melting snow. All gates are expected to be open. Before going out the gates please listen to the patrols advice. Never enter strictly off limits areas looking for fresh snow. Have a good day.
