Good morning.

No fresh snowfall to report and this morning there is lots of pleasant blue sky with a bit of cloud. The sun is out.

It feels quite cold this morning but should get warm up a little with the sunshine.

Niseko Avalanche Report

Mountain base 6am: 0℃, no snowfall. Moiwa800m: NNW 347°7.1m/s, -2℃. Annupuri1100m: W 279°7.7m/s, -5.5℃. Yu no sawa1000m: N 358°2.3m/s, -4.8℃. Village900m: NW 310°5.0m/s, -3.7℃. Hirafu1000m: -5.1℃. Hanazono720m: NW 319°3.7m/s, -2.0℃. Sea of Japan Benkei cape: NW12m/s, Kamui cape: NW4m/s, 1016hPa, 0.9m waves.

Clear sky and no overnight snowfall. A north westerly wind picked up around 3am, generating some snowdrifts in leeward slopes above 800m. Looking at all data and observations, the overall avalanche risk is low today. All gates are scheduled to open from the morning, peak gates will close at 2:30pm. The mountain is frozen in the morning but will soften and thaw as the temperature rise after 9am. Stay away from the gully bottoms in order to avoid being caught in gigantic glide avalanches. There is no chance to survive from those slides. Creeks are swelling and snow-bridges are likely to collapse. The water is ice cold, beware.

Debates questioning the mandating of the helmets and beacons are occurring recently. Niseko is now considering mandating that equipment in order to minimize the risk of accidents under the growing number of people accessing the out of bounds areas. Respecting the freedom to ride the mountain is the spirit that lies at the base of the Niseko Rules. Mandating the safety equipment can be seen as a contradiction to this spirit. However, we cannot forget that the out of bounds area in question is being accessed through the ski resort. It may be a disappointing change for some, but we’d like to call for everyone’s acceptance in order to prevent most of the crucial incidents.

This year’s warm weather and the covid19 situation are probably influencing the cause of this debate. For now, we strongly recommend to wear helmets and beacons. Have a nice day.
