Good morning to you all.

Have a fun Christmas Day? It was a fine day out and about on the mountain with fine weather to enjoy - lots of blue sky and sunshine in the middle of the day.

I had a relatively quiet evening with a few close friends but I have no doubt there was some lively partying going on in some places not too far from where I was. Good natured, I'm sure!

More headaches than usual - and no fresh snowfall this morning - might mean that first lifts this morning may be quieter than usual...

So yes, there's no fresh cm of snowfall to report and it's a relatively a mild morning; currently hovering around 0C here at base. Light snow is actually falling now and there's a slight dusting on my car outside. Hopefully this is the start of the next delivery of snowfall, though with temperature set to rise a little during the day I am a bit worried about the chance of rain (down at base anyway).

After reporting that the top lift at Niseko Annupuri and one of the top lifts are Niseko Grand Hirafu were open yesterday, this morning I can report that the top Wonderland lift at Niseko Village is also now planned to be operating. Well, it planned to be but it looks like early morning wind is preventing those top lifts from opening.

---

I was just taking a look at the numbers in my reports from previous seasons. Here's the observed snowfall I have reported:

December 2016: 154cm (up until today)
December 2015: 244cm (full month)
December 2014: 519cm (full month)
December 2013: 275cm (full month)

Season total until 26th December 2016: 266cm
Season total until end of December 2015: 308cm
Season total until end of December 2014: 549cm
Season total until end of December 2013: 398cm

We still have 5 days left in December 2016 of course, but we need a decent chunk of snow to catch up with some of those numbers. The forecast is looking pretty good over this last week of the month with regular snowfall expected... we will have to wait to see how those numbers shape up though.

And just take a look at those numbers for December 2014! Wow, that really was a month to remember... over 5m falling in 1 month.

That's impressive.

(All of this - and much, much more! ;) - can be found lower down on this page, the new 'Snowfall Analysis' page and the report archives).

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base 6am: -2℃ no snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -4℃, no snowfall. Annupuri 1150m: -7℃, no snowfall. Hirafu 1000m: SW10m/s, light dusts. Coastal data: Kamui cape SSW21m/s, 1018hPa, 1.5m waves.

The general avalanche risk is low. However the slopes are in hazardous conditions, beware of going out of control and hitting obstacles. The next storm is approaching and the weather will deteriorate soon. Make plans accordingly.

Gates are yet to be ready and out of bounds access from the resort is still restricted. Do not duck ropes to step out of bounds.

Niseko has experienced many tragic accidents in the past and the Niseko Rules have been implemented for preventing accidents in the out of bounds area. Niseko is one of the only place that officially tolerates out of bounds skiing in Japan, but is also paying attention to all user’s safety.

Snow is still insufficient, however temperature difference is large and the wind is strong above 1000m. The groomers are hard but not in bad conditions.

Lift passes will be confiscated if ropes are ducked. Accommodations and guides also have the responsibility to tell their guests about the rules in Niseko. Please respect the Niseko Rules.

Resort specific opening news at time of writing (subject to change during the day):

The mountain is nearly (but not yet quite) fully open with top lifts. Wind is affecting top lifts at the start of the day.

Niseko Grand Hirafu
The top Ace Number 4 lift remains closed.
The King Number 4 lift is on stand-by at the start of the day due to winds.
It looks like it is just the Miharashi course that is now officially not open at Niseko Grand Hirafu.

Niseko HANAZONO Resort
All lifts plan to be operating.

Niseko Village
The top Wonderland lift is now scheduled to be operating - but wind this morning is delaying that.

Niseko Annupuri
The top Jumbo Number 4 lift is on stand-by at the start of the day due to winds.
