Good morning to you all.

There's a slight dusting on my space this morning, but it is not enough for me to award a coveted cm to my report I'm afraid. If I could record half cms, I would be able to do something, but I can't justify it with just a few mm. Doh!

More importantly than all that, there obviously won't be a thick fresh layer of snow on the slopes so conditions will be rather different from yesterday. As the Avalanche Report says, everything got pretty smashed yesterday. (I like that. The phrase, not the slopes being smashed up bit!) I am sure the groomed courses will be lovely this morning.

The forecasts seem to be telling us to expect the next snow around Monday so perhaps we can enjoy a weekend of calmer conditions and some sunshine.

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Mountain Base 6.00am: -10°, no new snow. Moiwa 800m: -8.8°, W1.9m/s, no new snow, calm. Mikaeri Weather Station: -9°, no new snow, no snowdrift development. Annupuri 1120m: snowpack 200cm. Hirafu Peak: -9°, no new snow. Kutchan Weather Station: -10.1°, snow depth -no change 153cm. Suttsu Weather Station: -4.2°. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NE9m/s. Kamui Cape: SSE2m/s, wave 1.2m.

We are currently under a high pressure zone, the atmospheric pressure gradient is shallow and the sea and mountains are calm. There has been no new snow fall and below 600m a hoar frost has formed from radiative cooling. From this mornings observation, cornices are fracturing in heavy dense blocks on the Jan 24 granular low pressure snowfall. Around 800m fracture face is about 120cm depth. Snowdrifts have stabilised and the general avalanche risk is low. All gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrols advice and be prepared before exiting the gates. Is your beacon on?

Everything got pretty smashed yesterday. Don't not enter Haru no Taki or Yu no Sawa looking for fresh tracks. 2 people were caught yesterday by Hirafu patrol and had their seasons passes confiscated. Niseko Rules exist to protect your freedom to ride out of bounds while giving a minimum level of safety. Please respect and follow the rules. The morning groomers will be fantastic.
