Good morning, and it's a beautiful one in Niseko today. An unexpected 10cm or so fell overnight and the sun is just barely shining through the clouds. Today should be a fun one pretty much everywhere. The resort will have some new snow and up higher more than 10cm.

Backcountry travel is a fairly good bet today. The visibility probably won't be very good, but there is new snow and it is relatively safe. If you are hiking somewhere, it would be wise to have been there before so you know the route in case of bad visibility.

Yesterday we saw some freezing rain accompanied with fairly light snow all within an afternoon's work. The weather has been changing even more frequent than normal so just a heads up. The wind wasn't too bad at all yesterday and rarely picked up over the occasional gust.

We can expect some snow in the next couple days and possible warm temps. Let's hope they don't get too warm because winter isn't done here in Niseko!

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base 6am: -2C, 10cm of graupels and broken particle snow in the past 12 hours. Coastal data: NW13m/s at Benkei cape, 0.6m waves and 1007hPa at Kamui cape. Annupuri peak: WNW5.3m/s, -10.3C. Annupuri 1000m: 475cm snowdepth.
Snowfall transition: Snowfall has picked up in early morning and the visibility is low. Snowfall has reached 15-25cm in the west side and 20cm in the east side at 1000m altitude. Snowdrifts will start to develop in leeward, ESE facing slopes, however snowfall is forecasted to calm down in late morning and a westerly wind to pick up later.
Hazard evaluation: Avalanche risk is rising in SE facing slopes above 800m due to new snow forming notable slabs. Those slabs will grow thicker and unstable as the wind picks up. A 30cm thick slab avalanche is likely to occur with skiing stimulation. It is unrecommended to easily drop into steep slopes around 1000m altitude.
Gates: Peak gates are scheduled to open at 9:30cm but is subject to lift operation. Please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. Gates 6, Moiwa, has been removed as the lift operation has terminated. The snow in the trees is soft and in good condition. Have a safe day.
