Good morning from Niseko.

The sun is out and it's clear skies all around this morning.

A mild spring day on the cards.

More snow to come? Perhaps around Thursday.

Today is the last Avalanche report of the season. May I take a moment to thank the good folk for their efforts throughout the season and for keeping us all informed.

Taihen otsukaresama deshita.

My reports will of course continue.

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base: -3℃, no snowfall, bluebird. Moiwa 800m: no data available. Annupuri1000m: 230cm snowpack. Hirafu 1250m: -7℃, mild breeze, no snowfall, clear sky. Sea of Japan Kamui cape lighthouse: S2m/s, 1017hPa, 0.5m waves. Benkei cape SSE2m/s.

The isobars are spread out and the ocean and mountain weather is calm. No new snow, the mountain is frozen in the morning. Thawing will start around 9am and the surface will soften up. Creeks will swell and full depth avalanche risk will rise in steep slopes under 800m elevation. Looking at the weather transition and coast guard data, the general avalanche risk is low and the peak gates 2 & 3 will open from the morning. Gates 6 & 10 will be removed as the Moiwa quad operation finished yesterday.

The Mikaeri Rindo cat-track between Moiwa and Annupuri has been maintained under the cooperation of Regional Forest Bureau, Niseko Town office and Moiwa Resort and managed by the Avalanche Institute for the purpose of research as well as emergency rescue path, however will not be groomed any longer. Big thanks to all related parties as well as ski patrols and cat operators.

The safety measures of Niseko area have been operated by both Niseko and Kutchan town as well as all 5 ski resorts. The freedom to ride out of bounds must be protected, however safety should not be compromised. The cause of the Niseko Rules lies in this statement. We’re always hoping that more people resonate with this idea.

Self-responsibility theory can only be applied in a limited situation. You don’t claim a kid being responsible of his own acts. This term should not be easily used just to avoid own responsibility or self-legitimization.

That’s a wrap for this season’s Niseko Avalanche Information.
