Good morning from Niseko.

It's blue skies and bright sunshine again this morning with just a bit of cloud in places. More of the same expected tomorrow as temperatures rise further, threatening to break into double digits down in town.

A big otsukaresama deshita to everyone over at the Niseko HANAZONO area which closed up for the season at the end of the day yesterday. Thank you and good luck with this years developments. I hope you can have take a bit of a rest.

There are a few adjustments to lift operations and I have swapped around the 'operating lift' info below to now show which lifts remain open, rather than listing which lifts are rested.

Niseko Grand Hirafu are saying that the lower and middle areas are for 'experts only' now due to snow condition. You can take the Ace Number 2 Center four lift and Hirafu gondola back down to base if you so wish. Of course, everyone reading this report is expert - and above! - as well as being particularly gnarly in nature, so that obviously doesn't apply to any of us. (But do tell any less gnarly friends you may have).

Annupuri is still open top to base, just a few courses closed in the lower area.

There really isn't much information coming from Niseko Village, other than the Gondola and top Wonderland lift remaining open.

Niseko Avalanche Report

Mountain Base: -5°, no new snow, sunny. Moiwa 800m:NW 5.5m/s, -3.2°. Annupuri 1100m: W 7.4m/s, -6.5°. Yu no Sawa 1000m: WNW 4.0m/s, -6.2°. Niseko Village 900m: NWN 4.7m/s, -5.2°. Hirafu 1000m : -6.0°. Hanazono 720m:NW 5.9m/s, -2.0°. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: SW 2m/s. Kamui Cape: S 13m/s, 1012hPa, wave 1.1m.

We are in the middle of high pressure system, cold air flowing into the area, sunny and stronger winds at higher levels. As daytime temperatures increase snow melt will continue. Gate No7 is closed from now. Peak gates are expected to be open.

This information is published to help prevent accidents for all resort users. The mountain community was forced into created the Niseko Rules and Avalanche Report following the increasing numbers of powder hounds coming to Niseko 40 years ago. Most winter avalanche accidents occur during bad weather. Blizzard snowdrifts are highly prone to avalanching, if this is taken common sense, no accidents will happen. The risk of full depth avalanches increases in spring. Cornices and snow bridges also collapse, and holes and cracks are everywhere. There is always danger in the mountains. Although Niseko Rules seem onerous, your safety is the No1 concern and we are tackling issues from a scientific viewpoint to achieve this.

It is strongly recommended that a helmet and beacon be worn to reduce risks during falls, collisions and burial. The mountains are moving into springtime. In the morning the snow is hard but will soften after 9pm. Have a good day.
