Good morning from Niseko.

Things cleared up yesterday but I think we got some of that kosa haze in the evening that many parts of Japan suffered from yesterday.

We have blue skies this morning and we are due a few more day of similar conditions.

All lifts should be opening as scheduled today.

Hey, is that the chance of some snow on the mountains I see around the weekend?

Today it's the last Niseko Avalanche Report of the 2020-2021 season.

As always, Shinya-san and colleagues do a very fine job. Thank you for your continued efforts.

Niseko Avalanche Report:

6:25am: Benkei cape: calm, Kamui cape: SW8m/s, 1013hPa, 0.6m waves. Hanazono 1000m: 1.0℃, S1.8m/s. Hanazono 720m: 2.5℃, WSW0.9m/s. Moiwa 800m: 2.4℃, NNW1.5m/s. Annupuri 1100m: 0.1℃, WSW3.0m/s. Yu no sawa 1100m: 1.2℃, N1.5m/s. Mizuno no Sawa top: 1.4℃, NNW2.8m/s. Kutchan town: 0.5℃, NE0.9m/s, 2cm snwofall in 24h, 91cm snowdepth. Moiwa base: 2.0℃, calm, no snowfall, bluebird sky, firm surface.

The weather is calm under a high-pressure system. The temperature will rise during the day. Peak gates 2 & 3 will open. Ask for some advice to the ski patrol before stepping out of the gates. Stay away from the valley bottoms to avoid giant climax avalanches. Climax slides in Niseko occur suddenly and are very destructive. This information will end today, however the snow season will continue for another while. I hope to finish the season without major accidents. Most accidents can be avoided by being precautious. I would like to thank all resort ski patrollers, CAT and chair lift operators. If it wasn’t for them, there would be no safety in and out of bounds. I would also like to thank the daily 5,000 online viewers of this information. The accidents in Niseko are prevented thanks to the mutual trustful relationship between the people who accepted the Niseko Rules and the community that accepted and respected the will of the snow riders. I strongly hope that the Niseko Rules won’t deteriorate for many years to come. These Rules may not be perfect, but I believe they aren’t that bad either. I would also like to thank Domi, John, Emiko and Tsubame, who’ve been helping out with the translation and maintenance of the weather devices. If it wasn’t for them, this information wouldn’t have been possible.

Akio Shinya, Niseko Avalanche Institute
