Last night brought us a bit of snow. It was definitely nice to see rather than rain! About 10cm covered the ground here. Yesterday we saw some pretty warm temps but it did get colder in the afternoon, which was good. Up in the higher elevations, we expect the snow to be pretty good. If the backbowls open, it should be pretty good snow out there.

Getting out into the backcountry may not pay off unless you get up to Yotei or somewhere of very high elevation. The snow was pretty slushy and will have frozen over at anything under 800m or so. There will be some issues with the snowpack because of the heavy snowfall and possible rain in some areas.

The forecast isn't looking like it will bring a whole lot over the next couple days at the moment. Perhaps Tuesday, there is some heavy snow, but it is still too far away to properly tell. If we can get enough snow and cold temps to cover up this bad layer, we should be good for the rest of March. Keep those fingers crossed and have a great day!

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base 6am: -2C, 10cm of humid broken particle snow in the past 12 hours. Coastal data: N5m/s at Benkei cape, 2.5m waves and 1018hPa at Kamui cape. Annupuri peak: not available, -9.4C. Moiwa peak: 20cm of heavy snowdrifts, -4C. Annupuri 1000m 475cm snow depth.
Snowfall transition: Warm air inflow on the 6th, wet snowfall and rain followed as the low-pressure system moved east and turned to strong snowfall again in the afternoon of the 7th. The storm calmed down by themorning of the 8th, the wind recorded SW22m/s at 1000m (Annupuri data & Benkei cape data), the snow-clouds are thin and snowfall is small, however snowdrifts, up to 80cm, have developed on top of Mar 6th surface (1200cm just below ridge-line).
Hazard evaluation: The snowdrifts under 800m altitude are stable, however cracks may still run on them. The stabilization of the snowdrifts above 1000m are delayed and surface snow avalanches are likely to occur with skiing stimulation.
Caution: Most of avalanche related accidents are happening during or just after storms. Caution is required in open slopes exceeding 30°steepness. Hoar layers are present at Mar 1st and 6th layer and may trigger a slide. Do not stay in valley bottoms where avalanches run through.
Gates: Peak gates are scheduled to open at 10am. Ask for the ski patrol’s adivice before stepping out of the gates. The snow is good.
