Hello and welcome to another Monday morning, and the start of what promises to be a vetr interesting week.

There's no new snowfall to report to you this morning, but all eyes are looking to the next few days and what's about to happen.

A significant low pressure system is on the way and it's one that should be bringing with it lots of snow and strong winds. Expect lift disruptions over the next few days. It's probably the price we are going to have to pay for potentially (and very probably) large amounts of fresh snow.

The day has started off mild and overcast, foggy too up there. Stronger winds higher up already with top lifts not going to open at the start of the day.

The mild conditions may well continue into tomorrow, bringing with it rain before the main event which is due sometime tomorrow.

I'm quite excited actually. (Well, not about the rain and wind!) But looking forward to reporting what goes on - let's see what nature brings us.

Niseko Avalanche Report

Niseko base 6am: +2C, mild wind, no snowfall & overcast. Moiwa 800m: no CAT track data available. Annupuri 1000m snowpack 330cm. Hirafu 1000m: S5m/s, -3C, no snowfall. Peak data: S10.9m/s, -3.4C. Benkei cape SSE13m/s, Kamui cape NE4m/s, 1022hPa, 0.7m waves.

A low-pressure system is approaching from the Sea of Japan, the temperature will rise and wet snow & wind will start above 600m, making the avalanche hazard rise again. Many of the avalanches occur in slopes with heavy snowdrift slabs. Approaching leeward steep slopes during drastic snowdrift development is a very bad idea. Most of the accidents are caused by misjudgments during poor weather. Risks of climax (ground) avalanche from 1100m is rising earlier than usual due to warm weather, stay away from valley bottoms in order to minimize the risks. Gates are expected to open from the morning, however may close anytime due to various reasons. Please respect the ski patrol’s decisions. 200cm thick ground avalanche are also likely to occur in steep slopes under lift line and cliff terrain under 500m altitude. Stay away from cracked slopes as they might slide without warning. Most accidents can be avoided with precautions. Please respect the Niseko Rules.
