The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here

Good morning from Yuzawa.

So yesterday that cloud cover from earlier in the morning started clearing up over the morning, leaving us with almost totally clear blue skies and sunshine by around lunchtime. It ended up being a beautiful, rather mild, day.

All the signs are that today is going to be warmer still, with the sun shining on us and temperatures maybe even rising to around 8C in town.

That's warmer than we'd like it to be - it's amazing how fast the snow levels around town can melt when it is warmer - so while that kind of weather is definitely 'feel good', a return to colder conditions will be welcome.

The break in the snowfall has given everyone a few days to deal with the snow before the next lot comes in.

And the next snow is due from tomorrow - snow and colder conditions are forecast for tomorrow and Saturday, perhaps a break on Sunday and then back to snow as we approach New Year. It's encouraging to see those forecasts.

-----

The Tashiro Area of Kagura opens from today, at last. Note that Tashiro and the main Kagura area are not yet course connected, so you make your choice! As well as the Tashiro Ropeway there will be 3 lifts operating at the Tashiro Area.

NASPA Ski Garden and Iwappara are both open from this morning, with most others opening tomorrow and Saturday.

Was speaking with a manager at Maiko yesterday - they plan to be mostly open from Saturday. Perhaps that thinking will be similar with other ski areas that currently remain only part open.

Now that it is Christmas period (with the 24th often being seen as the bigger event in Japan), Santa-san is scheduled to be making some appearances family-friendly ski areas today and tomorrow. Though it does feel like there is less of that kind of thing happening this season. No doubt due to the coronavirus situation.

On that subject, I don't think any cases of it have been reported in Yuzawa - at all. There have been some in Minamiuonuma, but they have been very small numbers. With the ski season starting many people from other regions are now coming to this area though. So let's all do everything we can... face coverings, social distancing, etc.

-----

From today the Niigata Prefecture government is starting up a special campaign to help support ski areas in the region.

The Niigata Ski Oni Waribiki ('Niigata Ski Demon Discount') campaign lets you buy lift tickets at a special discounted rate at ski areas in the Prefecture, along with rental discounts at some. It looks like most of the ski areas in the area are participating - looks like only Nakazato Snow Wood and Mt Granview are not participating. (That may change).

The value of the discount available is different at each ski area, but using the campaign you can get a discount of up to 3,500 yen off a 1 day lift ticket and up to 5,500 yen on rental. For lift tickets you are allowed to use the scheme up to two times.

The available information is all in Japanese, but if you or your friends can work with a Japanese website it might be worth taking a look.

The system seems simple enough but you will need to sign up for and use the PassMe! (パスミー)electric ticket system to make use of the campaign.

More information can be found here:

https://niigata-oniwari.jp/

Niigata Ski Oni Waribiki is planned to be available from 24th December 2020 until 28th February 2021.

(You can see the campaign official logo below the photos today)

-----

As mentioned in the report yesterday, if you are interested in winning a lift ticket for any of the ski areas in Minamiuonuma, you might get lucky with our lift ticket giveaway:

Good luck!

-----

Apologies for the mistake in the report yesterday morning, since adjusted. 23rd December used to be a national holiday but it no longer is and so yesterday was a normal weekday.
