10am update

After the cloudy start, it's mostly sunny blue skies over the area now. (Sometimes it feels like a report at this time would be better than earlier...)

Original report

Good morning from Yuzawa.

It was a mild day yesterday and indeed that earlier cloud cover did mostly clear up leaving us with a lot of blue sky and sun through most of the day, with some lingering thin cloud and an almost hazy feel going on later in the afternoon.

We are still forecast mild conditions today and tomorrow - more cloud likely today, more sun likely tomorrow... to be followed by some potentially major snowfall starting from sometime on Wednesday which should last for at least a few days.

A call to Mt Granview yesterday morning confirmed that they were opening yesterday... ‘once they had moved snow... perhaps around lunchtime”. As retro-ly charming as usual! :)

With Mt Granview open that means that all the ski areas in the region should now be open. (Apart from the small Ishiuchi Hanaoka area which is taking the year off).

Early morning note: the Sunrise Express lift at Ishiuchi might get off to a late start today due to some sort of maintenance.

-----

In the run up to the New Year we are usually seeing increasingly crowded lifts and runs. A look around different ski areas yesterday and webcams showed variations, but things are certainly generally quieter than usual which is probably to be expected given where we are. Many visitors to the Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region are traditionally visiting from the Tokyo and Kanto region, and authorities in those areas in particular have been making an appeal to people to try restrict movement and travel over the New Year period.

Ski areas are generally doing what they can to appeal to guests to co-operate by wearing face coverings, keeping distance, limiting mixing on ski lifts and gondolas and all the usual things to help prevent potential spread of the coronavirus. Infections breaking out would not be good for anyone, not least the people who are directly affected of course.

Everyone really wants to be able to forget about this subject, but for those of us here perhaps we should think of these measures as a small price that lets us get some much needed enjoyment. After all, many people are very sadly not able to even physically get to be here, so in that respect we must consider ourselves very lucky.

Gambarimasho.
