Good morning from Zao.

Good doesn't seem the right word though.

It has been raining down at base, though it is snowing higher up according to the resort. The resort is still struggling for snow so some decent snowfall over the next few days would be most welcome. Let's try to will it to happen.

Yesterday wind was affecting many lift operations and what was available out there and some lifts are affected this morning.

I'd like to reply to a comment sent in to the site yesterday about the timing and detail of my reports.

Could I please direct you to some comments that the reporter on the Hakuba Now made a few weeks back:

Please read this

What I would say regarding the timing of reports is generally what the Hakuba Now reporter said. Although in this case I would like to clearly note that the person sending in the comments was not rude! :)

I am not posting these reports on behalf of the ski resort. I am not part of the ski resort. I am not here to promote Zao.

Should the ski resort post early morning ski reports for its guests? I would say probably yes, I think that would be a great idea. It is their business to provide information for their paying guests (preferably early morning given that they are a ski resort).

But we are not the ski resort and we are not posting official reports.

Each morning I check information that the ski resort puts out before I post my report. Alas, said information is not particularly in-depth and sometimes a bit... lacking. I can't do anything about that. Sometimes I make phone calls to check stuff. I am not able to go out to check everything on the mountain each morning in order to report to you. That would be totally impractical. So I use the official information in addition to reporting what I see from here close to base each morning.

I do my best to post reports each morning and they may not be as early as some of the other reports.

But I do not recommend totally relying on them to make important decisions. That is not my responsibility. Visitors to Zao are not my guests, they are the guests of the ski resort and accommodations and the other businesses that are providing such services.

The alternative to my less than perfect and sometimes late reports is... no reports at all.

I hope that puts a bit more light on the situation!

Gambarimasu.
