Niseko Now!

Saturday 10th December 2005, 8:46am
Weather conditions: Snowing heavily
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday afternoon colder air started moving in and brought plenty of snow with it. The snow continued throughout the night laying down close to a foot of very light and dry powder. The snow is forecast to continue until Wednesday. Today sees the Hirafu Gondola and the new No Name Lift opening for the first time this season. This will allow easy access to terrain that has practically been untouched so far this season.    Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Saturday 10th December 2005, 9:16am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
What's this, where's that snow they promised us?! 20-40cm they said --- we got maybe 2cm! We wish to make a formal complaint to, er, someone! It's just cloudy right now in Yuzawa town - thought it does look like it could snow at any time. Snow is still forecast, but we're not mentioning those forecast people today. ;)

Anyway enough of the moaning.

Gala opened up this morning at 7am, as did parts of the Tashiro area of Kagura for the weekend (it is open just for today and tomorrow and then plans to close again until next weekend).

No opening for Iwappara today though.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Saturday 10th December 2005, 9:18am
Weather conditions: Overcast & snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --

Well, the forecast said it may clear up today... nope! Another 50 cm on top overnight and still coming down heavy. If you haven't booked your ski/snowboard trip to Hakuba yet, what are you waiting for?! Get your gear and head for the slopes!

All the areas have a great base and it looks like all runs should be opening soon. Cortina has opened up today and no doubt will be awesome!! Hope to see you out there.

Afternoon update:

One word says it all. AMAZING! It just keeps coming down harder and harder. It is presently snowing 5 cm an hour in the valley and more than this on top. What was groomed this morning has another 30 or so cms on top of that now. It has been snowing so hard now that the locals are getting scared of the thought of all the snow shoveling they haven't done and what a task it is going to be when they get the time to get in to it. Since yesterday, at this time, it has snowed about 80 cms! There is so much snow it is getting hard to see out first story windows. There is very little wind activity to speak of and temperatures continue to be mild so the snow in the valley is slightly heavy and settling fast, compacting and creating a great base to flatten down all the shruberies and ensure a great holiday season in Hakuba.

Well just with all of the heavy snowfall we start to be concerned with snow sliding on steeper slopes and if it does we could be talking big results. The snow at the pessent temperatures and lack of wind will allow for good settling with in the snow pack, thus allowing for rounding and bonding to occure. The thing to watch out for is sudden changes in the temperature and incresed wind volocity. If we experience strong winds now we will experience a lot of rapid transport of snow from the windward slopes to deposit on the lee slopes. Soft cornices will also be forming. So do take care out there. Some times the most dangerous slopes are the small insignificant ones that we some time over look as a danger to us. These are the ones with generally the most amount of terrain traps and where groups may not be as concerned about spacing. Remember that with a lot of new snow the moving is slow and this makes for a very dificult rescue and evacuation. With all the fresh powder to be had on the resorts and the poor weather conditions there is little reason to be heading into the backcountry at the present.    Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Saturday 10th December 2005, 9:26am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Cloudy this morning, with everyone hoping that it will start snowing soon. The runs that are open are in need of a topup and we haven't yet had that big dump to really get things going, so the wait continues. Temperatures about what they have been over the last week.    Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Saturday 10th December 2005, 23:13pm
Weather conditions: Heavy snowfall in village since 11am
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
UPDATE: It's been dumping like a brick layer on boxing day since about 11am. The village is currently (right now) drowning in heavy heavy snowfall like we have not seen so far this winter. The streets have hydronic heating pipes running throughout them, but they cannot keep up with the constant large flaked down-pour.

Light steady snowfall across the entire Nozawa Onsen region, with low foggy cloud cover in all directions as far as the eye can see. The local reports state no new readings of snow but there must be at least 5cm of new snow, up top, since it started light snowing late yesterday. A light breeze often switching to a strong breeze comes and goes and adds to the whole overcast and snowy feel of this grey day. A partial white out from time to time up at Yamabiko area with low numbers of snowboarders and skiers enjoying themselves for the weekend. Snowfall intensity, up higher on the mountain, seems to be increasing slightly as time goes by. Heavier snowfall is predicted for Sunday.    Read more ...
