Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Finally a break from the heavy snowfalls. Last night relatively clear skies meant the temperature dropped to around -18 in Kutchan. This morning there is only high cloud around and Mt Yotei and all other peaks in the region are clearly visible. Should be a good day to climb to the summit of Annupuri from which you can see down to the Sea of Japan coast and also across to the Pacific beyond Lake Toya.

Still this window of decent weather will be short lived with snow predicted to return to the region later today and continue for the next couple of days. After that warmer weather is expected to hit the region over the weekend. Above zero temps and wet snow is forecast. People will need to be careful as in these conditions snow that has built up on roofs will likely slide.

Anyway get out there and enjoy the powder and good visibility whilst it lasts!   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Thin overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Slightly overcast skies today, with calm winds. Temperatures are colder than usual and the courses are hard-packed groomed and great for cruising, as the visibility is good. Looks like the weather might get worse by the afternoon, so get your runs in early.

After a day of clear skies and no new snow over the last 48 hours the snow pack has done some settling. The lower layers would seem to have bonded quite nicely leaving use with only moderate instability in the upper 40-50 cms of the pack.

Winds were very strong 2 days ago and created wind slab in most areas in the alpine and at tree line. It is possible for this wind slab to slide on steeper slopes from areas of tension. ie. around rocks, from steep convexing terrain, corniced areas and from tensioned ridge areas that ave heavy wind deposits below.

In two recent pits in the tsugaike area the following was found of southerly facing slopes.

Tsugaike shizenen, elevation 1800 metres, aspect S
Compression Test Easy @ 38cm from surface on new snow, needles, columns with some faceting occuring size 0.5~2 mm, sudden collapse.

Rutsch Block 2 @ 38 cm

Slope Test. Ski cut, produced size 1 soft slab, 40 cm hieght of crown, 20 x 20 metres in area, deposit stopped mid track.

Tsugaike Tengupara, elevation 2000 metres, aspect SE
Compression Test Easy ~ Moderate @ 33 & 37cm from surface on fist density new snow underlaying wind crust and overlaying 1 finger density snow, with some faceting occurring just above 1 Finger layer, size 0.5 mm, Progressive Compression

Rutsch Block 5 @ 33 cm

Multiple slope use resulted in no slides on South East facing slopes in the Tsugaike area.

Natural avalanches unlikely. Human triggered avalanches possible.
Use caution in steeper terrain on certain aspects.   Read more ...

It's one of those days when the previous evening forecast is completely wrong.... we have blue skies and a bright sun shining this morning in Yuzawa. It is very cold though and there are icy conditions out early on.

Very few people about this morning - a perfect day to be out on the hills yourself.

Weather conditions: Blue sky day, not a cloud anywhere.
New snowfall: --

Another blue sky day, fantastically clear and not that many people about. It should be an awesome day anywhere on the mountain. The villagers should be in a great mood as well, as they have another chance to clear thier rooftops of meters of snow.   Read more ...
