Snow and weather reports posted on Saturday 30th May 2020
Thursday 12th December 2019, 6:58am
We have been hit by some heavy rain from the early hours of the morning and the rain will be with us until around midday, when it will turn into snow. The warm weather and sun yesterday caused a lot of melt in the village with roads and footpaths turning to slush. The lower slopes of the ski area have been visibly affected by the mild weather and small patches of brown have broken through the white. The good news is that temperatures will drop below freezing in a few hours time and hopefully a good dump of snow is on the way.
Yes, a bit of rain before the snow and for early morning mild conditions continuing.
It's not the most inspiring of mornings but hopefully tomorrow I will be bringing tales of snow on the ground. (Tales as in stories, not made up stuff -- of course. Probably not the best word to use!)
Rather windy conditions are forecast today too...
Official snow depth (as reported by resort):
- Upper: 130cm - Lower: 60cm
Lifts, courses & tree run info:
- Gondola lift operating, other lifts due to start from Saturday - All main courses open - Tree runs not open yet Read more ...

A quick report this morning with the perhaps inevitable news - Madarao have announced that they will not be able to open on Saturday as planned.
There is still snow forecast for later today, but even so just not enough likely to be able to open. The forecast for the week ahead isn't looking particularly snowy either, I'm afraid. Perhaps a bit more on Saturday.
Anyway we just need to be patient. Or try to be anyway. ;)
Madarao - Saturday 14th December 2019 - opening delayed, will open as soon as there is enough snow Tangram Ski Circus - Saturday 21st December 2019 Read more ...

Cloud, fog and...
Good morning from Zao.
Fine weather yesterday. Lots of cloud and fog around this early morning with limited visibility on the mountain - and down in the village too in places. There is some light rain falling as well, though snow is being reported by the resort up top. It is due to get colder as the day moves on, bringing the freezing level down and hopefully snow to base as well. Might be windy today too. Not the most pleasant of mornings!
Limited parts of the mountain remain open but we need more snow to really feel like things are 'happening'.
Nighta in the Uwanodai area is scheduled daily from 28th December 2019 until 1st March 2020 and then 7th, 14th, 20th and 21st March 2020. 5:00pm until 9:00pm.
Nighta in the Yokokura area is scheduled for New Year (28th December 2019 until 5th January 2020); and also on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays between 10th January and 7th March 2020. 5:00pm until 9:00pm.
The Zao Ropeway opens in the evenings on the below dates for 'Light Up' sightseeing purposes - to go and see the Juhyo monsters (not for skiing or boarding) on the following dates:
December 2019: 28th, 29th, 30th, 31st January 2020: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 10th-12th, 17th-19th, 24th-27th, 29h-31st February 2020: all days apart from Tuesdays

Good morning from Yuzawa.
It's a bit... dark... this morning. Moody.
There's a bit of a frost on the car windscreen this morning.
It is just cloudy right at the moment, but already raining just to the north in Minamiuonuma. It should either be raining or snowing here soon - almost certainly starting as the former in town, but by later on we should be seeing some white falling and hopefully some snow overnight.
As much as I'd love to be able to report a forecast that shows loads of snow, it doesn't look like it's going to be much. Let's hope we have a nice surprise.
Maiko Snow Resort were hoping to open tomorrow (Friday), and they are going to make an announcement later today - I'll let you know about that tomorrow.
No other news to share with you yet from resorts planning to open from Saturday. It clearly isn't going to happen for lower ski resorts.
As a recap, here are the resorts that hoped to open from Saturday:
The Yuzawa Now report tomorrow may be a bit later than usual as we check up on as many available details as possible.
For the moment, part of Kagura and Naeba remain open.
Kagura is currently part open:
- Mitsumata Ropeway (8:00am-5:00pm, last one up a 3:30pm) - Mitsumata Number 1 quad (8:00am-4:00pm) - Mitsumata Number 2 romance pair (8:30am-4:30pm) - Kagura Gondola (8:15am-4:00pm, last one up at 3:00pm) - Kagura Number 1 quad (8:30am-3:30pm)
- Main course (1500m) - Family course (1,100m) - Gondola course (4,000m)
Naeba is also part open with the lower base course area available.
Just between friends, after a beautiful day yesterday (warmer than we would like), it's a bit miserable this morning. A bit dark and a bit damp. We are told that there is a chance of snowfall today but we may get rained on first. That should be starting fairly soon...
Until tomorrow. Snow, snow, snow, snow... (repeat)...
Naeba is part open:
- Number 5 high speed lift (8:00am until 5:00pm) - Number 4 romance pair lift (8:00am until 5:00pm) - The lower base slopes between those lifts are open with a fairly narrow course of natural + artificial snow Read more ...

Hello and I'm afraid I don't have happy news to report.
It's raining across the region.
The good news is that it should be getting colder as the day progresses and we are hopeful for snowfall, though it does not seem likely to continue much into tomorrow morning and there looks to be a bit of a milder spell coming early next week too.
It is a bit concerning but as we can't do anything about it we'll just have to play with what we have.
At Minowa, the C lift is going to be taking a rest until there's more snow. Other resort operations appear to be unchanged for the moment.
Grandeco Snow Resort:
- Number 1 lift and Gondola are operating - 3000m of course available - Rainbow 3500 (upper area) - Lavender B - Connecting to Center course
- B lift operating
Hoshino Resorts Nekoma:
- Forest 3 course open
Opening information - subject to change of course depending on weather/snow conditions.
We have been enduring some rather annoying rain and this morning conditions are forcing some changes to ski lift operations (as well as nerves and hurt feelings).
Niseko Grand Hirafu have reported that due to the rain yesterday the lower areas are now closed, leaving them with just Shirakaba and Center courses open. The Ace Number 2 Center quad and Ace Number 3 lifts are on hold. The Niseko Village and Niseko Annupuri gondolas - as well as the upper Jumbo Number 4 lift (at Annupuri) - are also on hold due to the conditions this morning. The Jumbo Number 1 quad lift will be opening about an hour late as they scramble to work with the snow conditions.
Hmmmmm... I note that many other regions of Japan have had a few days of rather warm conditions and there seems to be a general lack of snow. That makes me sad, as I'm sure it does you too. It's not like we can do much about it though...
OK, so trying to pick myself up a little, we should be seeing snowfall in time for my report tomorrow. It is trying now and hopefully will be trying harder in the coming hours.
I'll see you tomorrow, hopefully with improved conditions.
Official snow depth (reported by resort): - Peak: 70cm - Base: 40cm
Ski lifts operating: - Niseko Gondola - ON HOLD - Upper Village Gondola - Village Express - Community Chair - Banzai Chair
Night time operations are normally available in the Niseko Grand Hirafu, Niseko Village and Niseko Annupuri resort areas. Subject to weather conditions. There is no nighta at the Niseko HANAZONO resort area. Read more ...

Morning from Hakuba.
OK so just the facts.
It's raining down below, but it is snowing up top.
It remains relatively mild but it is due to get colder as the day goes on, so we can hope for snow down to lower areas. It doesn't look like it is going to be continuing beyond today though, with perhaps with some more snow around Saturday.
Happo-one is reporting 2cm of snowfall by the top of the Gondola on social media. On their official site they are reporting 10cm at Kurobishi and 0cm at Usagidaira.
Hakuba 47 are reporting 1cm (and then 2-3cm) on social media; and recording 1cm on the official site.
(See how it can all be ever so confusing? Still, I am going to report what is out there...).
Hakuba 47 is hoping to get the Line C lift back up and running from Saturday. Gambatte!
- Ichinose Family: Number 2 pair lift A line operating - Ichinose Diamond: Diamond quad lift - Kumanoyu: Number 2 pair lift A & B line operating - Takamagahara Mammoth: Number 2 triple and Number 3 pair lifts operating - Yakebitaiyama: Number 4 romance lift - Yokoteyama: Number 1 Sky A line and Number 5 lift operating
Other areas of Shiga Kogen are waiting for more snow.
- The section of road connecting the southern area of Shiga Kogen (from Yokoteyama onwards) with Gunma Prefecture is now closed for the season. It will be closed until 24th April 2020. Read more ...
