Niseko Now!

Monday 12th January 2004, 9:12am
Weather conditions: Cloudy, snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday's strong winds slowed most lifts and made visibility poor. Despite this, long weekend crowds turned out in force, and the lift queue at the gondola was long.

This morning there is only about 5cm of fresh snow cover, but wind conditions are slight, and visibility much better. Small flakes of snow are falling at present, and the sun looks like poking through at any moment. With the peak being closed yesterday, deep turns await those willing to walk. Avalanche caution required.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Monday 12th January 2004, 14:00pm
Weather conditions: Clear
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After a wind-affected day yesterday that may have frustrated some, we've got perfect conditions today that should send everyone home extremely happy. It's picture-postcard clear and crispy cold, and the views are stunning. For all you technical skiers, at Happo huge moguls can be seen on Usagidaira from miles away.

For those venturing into the backcountry, the fluctuating snow-then-sun conditions have created some nasty layers in the snowpack. Be sure to dig a pit and watch what you're doing. There are several guiding operations in Hakuba if you're not experienced in the mountains, and they'll be happy to take you somewhere safe and suitable for your level. Evergreen Outdoors offer a wide range of English services, for example.
