Minakami Now!

Friday 13th April 2007, 8:24am
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
No snow has fallen for the last week. Typical Spring weather patterns have started settling in, with some days of rain and warm winds from the South.

The Tone River dams have started releasing signalling the start of the rafting season. Minakami is now in the seasonal changeover where a mix of cars can be seen with kayaks and rafts or skiis and snowboards on their roofs.

Tenjindaiara and Houdaigi are still open with Houdaigi closing after this weekend on the 15th and Tenjindaira planning to stay open until after Golden Week.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Overcast.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
All the fresh snow from yesterday morning had melted in the village by the middle of the day and we are back to the muddy gray snow of the last few weeks. Today there is thick, low lying cloud covering the tops of the mountains but the sun is slowly burning through and it feels fairly warm. The forecast is predicting for it to remain overcast with a good chance of precipitation later on, at the moment it is hard to tell if it will fall as rain or snow today. Tomorrow looks like we could get some heavier rain showers.

Weather conditions: Cloud, hazy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is another mild start to the morning and today it might get as warm as 15 degrees. Just cloudy early on, and quite overcast, and the forecast tells us to expect that for the day. There is a good chance of rain late tonight and into early tomorrow morning, though that seems likely to clear up in the morning.

There is only a breeze at the moment, but due to forecast stronger winds later on Gala Yuzawa have announced that they will not be open today. Hopefully they might be able to open tomorrow, but right now there are similar winds forecast for tomorrow as well. We'll update the page again later this evening with the latest...

Hakuba Now!

Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Crack "O" Nooners Report:

Today in Hakuba we have hazy/cloudy warm weather with temps currently at about 10 deg.C and climbing and winds are light to moderate out of the S.W. . Rain showers are expected for this evening and back to cloudy tomorrow. The ski hills look good for un-crowded fun spring riding conditions. In the valley below, it would be an excellent day for a Mountainbike ride. A great season really, with choices of ON or OFF snow activities, probably the locals favorite time to play and actually have time to mingle with other locals.

( See Backcountry Advisory Below )

Avalanche Hazard:

Above tree line: Considerable

Tree line: Moderate

Below tree line: Low

Backcountry Travel Advisory:
Continue to be cautious as temperatures rise and on days that warm faster than usual.

People heading out in the backcountry should be wary of solar radiation on south facing aspects. Wind loaded slopes and cornices will also be areas to avoid as the day warms up. As mentioned earlier, shallow snowpack over bushes, rock outcroppings and bamboo (sasa) will be more likely to slide. Also take care in convex areas as there may be glide cracks formed and big holes in the snow.   Read more ...
