Yuzawa Now!

Monday 13th December 2010, 9:36am
Weather conditions: Grey skies, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Rain yesterday for the most part but this morning it has started off just cloudy in Yuzawa. The skies seem clear, but grey and the odd darker cloud hanging around. At the moment it is 7 degrees.

Later on we have rain forecast, perhaps heavy once again and into Tuesday and perhaps even Wednesday. Of course we were hoping for that to be snow, and it surely will be higher up, but lower down is looking questionable now. Come on winter, lets get going!

Some fairly strong blowy winds are preventing Gala Yuzawa from opening today. Hopefully, once the new downhill course is open, this kind of report will be a thing of the past as people will be able to get back down the mountain rather than relying on the Gondola.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Monday 13th December 2010, 9:37am
Weather conditions: Overcast skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Lots of happy people coming down from the Mountain yesterday
By all reports was a great first day of the season

Snow quality was surprisingly good and there was a decent coverage on all of the slopes in operation
Light snow was falling throughout the day on top

Still not much on the lower slopes and will need a few good dumps before we see them open, but Yamabiko on top is a winter wonderland. Amazing what a difference 1000m of elevation can make

Overcast weather here this morning and unfortunately some rain forecast however that is set to turn into snow when the temperature drops this evening

Then still showing consistent falls throughout the week so hope for more slopes to open by next weekend.
The Resort Shuttle bus is also due to start operation from Saturday 18th of December

Courses open:

Yamabiko courses A
Yamabiko course C
Yamabiko course D
Yamabiko course E
Uenodaira course

Lifts operating:

Nagasaka Gondola (both sections)
The two Yamabiko quad lifts
Uenodaira quad lift   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Monday 13th December 2010, 9:43am
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow yesterday abated late in the afternoon and it was mostly fine throughout the night. The winds have died down and finally a few lifts are up and running around the resort today. Currently there is a high overcast with some lower cloud around the peaks and some snow is expected in the afternoon. Temps will get up to a little above freezing at the base of the mountain so the snow will be quite a bit wetter than what fell yesterday. Currently the Family, Ace #3 and #3 are running in Hirafu. They are not allowing skiing out to the base as yet so you will have to download on the quad. At Annupuri the Gondola and Jumbo #3 lifts are running.

Tomorrow will see some more snow and then on Wednesday as a low pressure system deepens to the NE of Hokkaido with a strong high over Siberia we'll see the classic winter setup which brings us some of the best quality powder on the planet. This week is just going to get better and better!   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Monday 13th December 2010, 10:31am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After a bit of a wet day yesterday that we can perhaps quickly forget, this morning it is just cloudy up at Kagura - but a strong noisy wind blowing about. The quad lift is moving though so the resort is open but it may be running slowly at times. There's not that many people at the resort though so it shouldn't hold people up much.

The bus is still taking you from the top of the Mitsumata Ropeway over to the base of the Kagura gondola with the No1 quad and No4 pair lift moving at Kagura.

Over at Tashiro the Ropeway is open, and the No1 and No2 pair and No1 quad lifts are also operating.

At Naeba the bottom slopes are becoming a bit more patchy (but they weren't open for skiing anyway).

If you remember the forecast was looking good for this week, so lets take a look at that. We will likely get rain later on today down in the village but some snowfall up top and similar into tomorrow. Hopefully snow on Wednesday and Thursday too --- though the heavy snow that we were looking forward to looks less likely right now unfortunately.... more like a few cm or so here and there. Unless things turn around again, it looks like we are going to have to wait that bit longer.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Monday 13th December 2010, 10:32am
Weather conditions: Overcast / Light rain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It was dark and cold this morning, with grey clouds everywhere. These clouds have started to drop a bit of drizzle so we're hoping that it should be cold enough for this to be snow higher up. This weather is supposed to continue all day.

The temperatures are due to drop over the next few days and hopefully we will see some proper snow by Wednesday. The resorts are relying on it to be able to open on Saturday - outwardly they seem confident. Let's hope the weather cooperates.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Monday 13th December 2010, 10:34am
Weather conditions: Cloudy, light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is presently snowing lightly here in Hakuba, the snow is the wet variety but snow none the less!

If the temperatures keeps cold and the snow keeps falling we can hopefully get some good base formed on the runs here. Rain/snow is expected for the rest of today, it will definitely be snow up high! YAY!

Resorts that are open still only have the upper lifts open and only a few runs open so people making the effort need to be aware of the shallow snowpack and hazards under the snow.

Precipitation is still forecasted for the next few days with the middle of this week is also looking good for some decent snow.

Resorts open in Hakuba (13th Dec):

Hakuba Goryu:
Goryu has opened the Alps no daira Panorama course with the Gondola and No 1 pair lift moving and taking people up the mountain.

Hakuba 47:
47 is also now open - just the R4 course and the upper part of the R8 course at the moment with the Gondola, Line A/B and Line E lifts operating.

Tsugaike Kogen:
This resort is also open. The Gondola plus the Han-no-ki high speed pair lift and the Han-no-ki No 4 lift are now up and running.

Happo still hasn't opened up yet.

Other resorts:

Hakuba Iwatake plans to open for the season on 18th December.

Hakuba Minekata and Hakuba Sanosaka plan to open for the season on 23rd December.   Read more ...

Zao Now!

Monday 13th December 2010, 10:38am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
No snow to report again this morning though I am hoping that by the end of the day it will be falling from the skies.

It's a chilly morning at -2 outside just a bit earlier on, a slight wind and grey, cloudy skies. From later on today the forecast has a fair few snowmen lined up over the next week, so obviously everyone is hoping that they will be nice big fat snowmen and bring with them lots of snow. It's getting fairly late for Zao to not be open and so everyone is itching to get going.

I've got to say though that even though we will surely get snow, it doesn't quite look like it will be the bonanza dump that we are hoping for. Hope I am wrong.

I will give you the latest tomorrow morning.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Monday 13th December 2010, 11:17am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow soon
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After some fine weather yesterday followed by some wet (I'll quickly move on!), this morning has started off grey and cloudy. Snow should be falling soon though and we should be getting some over the next few days, though not as much as we might have hoped for. It should still get particularly cold from Thursday but unfortunately the weather conditions to go with that are forecast to be sunny and clear. Let's hope that changes.

Yakebitaiyama doesn't seem to be operating the Gondola today and perhaps won't on weekdays before the season gets going proper.

Yokoteyama on the other hand has opened some more lifts and they now have 5 moving

Lifts currently operating in the different resort areas of Shiga Kogen:

Sun Valley:
1 lift

1 lift

Ichinose Family:
2 lifts

Ichinose Diamond:
1 lift

2 lifts

Okushiga Kogen:

Furano Now!

Monday 13th December 2010, 12:29pm
Weather conditions: Sunny
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Saturday saw snow dumping down very heavily and about 4cm was deposited in an hour. Unfortunately the snow stopped quite suddenly. Later Saturday evening the rain that was forcast hit Furano and it rained heavily for a number of hours. This washed away a lot of snow around the village. On Sunday temperatures were very cold and because of the rain the roads, footpaths and slopes became extremely icy. Locals were trying to keep off the roads due to the extreme nature of the conditions.

Overnight we were blessed with 15cm of fresh powder snow in the village and about half as much again on the upper slopes. This is real good quality snow and for the first time this year we can truely say that winter has arrived. The roads and slopes are still very icy and slippery though under the layer of fresh snow.

Today Furano Ropeway and Downhill Romance Lift #2 are operating. It is now possible to ski from the top of Furano Ropeway to the bottom of the resort. The resort's report mentioned grass and rocks coming through the snow cover, but first hand reports have said this is overstated and that there is not a lot to worry about.

The Sailer Course is the only course open at the moment. Given last nights snow and the forecast for the rest of the week (which is for more snow) it shouldn't be long before we see more of Furano Zone open.   Read more ...
