Naeba Now!

Tuesday 13th February 2007, 7:58am
Weather conditions: grey sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A cloudy start to the day with the sun trying to shine through the clouds. -3 at 900 meters with no wind. The top half of Naeba is shrouded in cloud and the dai Ichi Gondola is beginning to move.

There's been about 4cm of snow since the last report, which may help us with a better coating up top.

Crowds of people at Asagai this morning, filing edges and waxing their pipe boards - a lot of apprehensive faces and funky looking nihonjins. May the best man and girl win!

A surprising amount of cars still in the Prince hotel car-park, so there's a lot of people still around from the weekend. Little bits of powder can be found around the mountain, but the most obvious areas have definately been spent by the weekend revellers. Some excellent reports back from yesterdays Kagura and Tashiro areas.

The sun is out now and the top cloud is burning off - so expect a great day on the mountain.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Tuesday 13th February 2007, 8:23am
Weather conditions: Sunny with cloudy spells.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was a fantastic day on the mountain, it started off sunny with great views across the valley and some great powder snow from the night before, it then dumped more snow through the afternoon and again cleared up by the end of the day. There has been only a dusting of snow in town overnight but we would have received a good 20cm on the mountain yesterday so it should be another great day up there today. The temperature is -11 at mountain base at the moment but the sun is out so it shouldn't feel too cold this morning.

The forecast is giving no more snow untill tomorrow afternoon, today should be mostly sunny with some cloudy spells.

Niseko Now!

Tuesday 13th February 2007, 8:45am
Weather conditions: Mostly clear skies.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
At times there were some clear spells yesterday, but it snowed fairly consistently for much of the day. It was heavy in the early evening until about 9pm when it eased off. During the day there must have been up to 15-20cms more snow on the mountain.

Today has dawned brilliantly with sun shine and blue skies. With a high sitting over Hokkaido today we can expect light winds and mostly clear skies. Watch for a bit of lingering cloud around the summit area. With the snow that has fallen over the past 36 hours today will be a great one out there.

Tomorrow will see a change in the weather. During the day the wind will increase from the southerly quarter and quite heavy snowfall is expected on Wednesday afternoon/evening. Strong winds are forecast with this system. Also it will come with relatively warmer temperatures.    Read more ...

Weather conditions: Cloudy

Hard pack conditions are generally the picture on the lift accessible terrain. One or so centimetres of very low density snow fell overnight so "dust on crust". the grooming machinery has been doing a fine job at least on the Tsuga Ike Lift Company terrain. More snow is in the forecast over the days after today.
Today's forecast for the valley floor is for a high of 5C sunny skies and light generally north-west winds

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Broken clouds
Temperature: Present: -2.0 C
Maximum: 8.0 C
Minimum: -4.0 C
Wind at surface: Light from west
Winds aloft: Light from the east
Precipitation: Nil
Barometer and trend: 924 hPa and rising
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 1 cm

Density of surface snow: not measured
Crust: 2 cm
Cloud ceiling: 1,850m a.s.l.

Tree line: Moderate

Below tree line: Low, increasing with daily warming

N.B. the lower elevation snow pack is "isothermal", especially on southerly aspects.

Travel Advisory:

Yesterday the air temperature at tree line and above was not observed to rise above 0C {eg. 1245 hrs., 1,990 m a.s.l.: -3.0C} but the sun affected the snow that was exposed to it. The northly exposures are generally still powdery but otherwise, at least to 2,170m a.s.l. {Tengu Para} the snow was so affect to some extent.

The travel/trail breaking is improving. Ski-penetration on February 11th was about 35 cm (anecdotal report of mid-calf ski-penetration at 1,800m a.s.l.). Yesterday the ski-penetration was generally 10 to 20 cm.    Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Tuesday 13th February 2007, 9:34am
Weather conditions: Clear at the top. Misty in town.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A misty and overcast morning in the village today. At the peak at Yamabiko however the skies are clear and the sun is shining. The village today is quiet so on the slopes there should be plenty of room. The snow over the last two days has been exceptional and today should also be quite good. Temperatures have remained cold. On the mountain is currently -5C. The village is 0C. Visibility high on the mountain is exceptional with great views down the valley.

The outlook over the next three days is for today to be relatively clear with light snow to fall tonight. Tomorrow a mix of unwelcome rain and snow should fall but on Thursday at least 25cm of nice snow should relace any snow lost to the rain. Wind on the mountain will be consistently high, with up to 50km/h on Friday.

No new snow overnight to report, with more blue sky and fine weather in the region... there has been more than that kind of weather than a usual season in Shiga Kogen.

After a cold start to the day it has warmed up and is currently fairly mild. There were not many people out on the slopes this morning. Conditions out on the slopes are pretty good even though snow depths are still not what we are used to!   Read more ...
