Myoko Now!

Wednesday 13th February 2008, 7:00am
Weather conditions: Blizzard
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Blizzards rolled in fast and early last night. High winds at all Myoko area resorts with record-breaking snow levels have got many of the lifts closed off. I will post updates throughout the morning on lift closings. Driving, even in the first hour of snowfall last night has been nearly unthinkable-chains or no chains.

These snows are gradually thinning out, but the winds are actually strengthening, so I would expect many lifts to close up throughout the day. (But just think what the conditions will be like upon opening:)

Your Myoko area levels for today:
300cm (Akakura Kanko);
2310cm (Akakura Onsen);
250cm (Ikenotaira);
380cm at the top, 215cm bottom (Suginohara);
315cm (Kyukamura);
220cm (Pine Valley);
400cm (Seki Onsen);
185cm (Madarao Tangram Ski Circus);
180cm (Madarao Sympathique);
215cm (Madarao Kogen);
310cm (Myoko Ski Park);
185cm (Togakushi);

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Wednesday 13th February 2008, 7:44am
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was by all reports an enjoyable day in Nozawa. We had a dusting of snow during the day which freshened up the resort. The snow stopped falling mid afternoon and then returned with a vengeance around 6pm. We have awoken to 30cm on the doorstep and I am sure considerably more on the mountain.

The forecast calls for lighter snow and cold temperatures for the rest of the week. Be sure to rug up warm because the wind chills on the mountain will be very cold.

Once the resort updates the snow depth figures I`ll post them. Please check back later!   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Wednesday 13th February 2008, 8:55am
Weather conditions: Overcast & snowy.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Skiing and boarding was a lot of fun yesterday with a 10 to 15cm cover of fresh snow on a cut up base. There was some deeper snow off the summit. It was certainly a better day than the day before but a lot of new snow is still needed to bring back normal Niseko powder conditions. It was snowing on and off yesterday but we were all hoping for heaps more.

It snowed sporatically through the night and is doing the same this morning. Unfortunately, it is not dumping but lots of snow and wind look to be coming with a big high moving across from Siberia and over the Sea of Japan. There is presently 20m/s winds on the peak which may stop the peak lifts from opening. Peak gates and no1 (L-ji) gate will be closed. The patrol is stating that avalanche danger is high. Winds are predicted to increase during the day with moderate snow falls.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Wednesday 13th February 2008, 9:01am
Weather conditions: Snowing blowing snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Full blown winter conditions today in Hakuba. Heavy snowfall and winds over the past 12 hrs have made for deep and dry snow conditions on and off piste. Be prepared for strong winds and cold temperatures on all resorts today with snow expected to continue throughout the day. About 20-30 cm of new snow at the base today with 40-50 up on the upper slopes. There is limited lift operation due to winds and high avalanche danger in the mountains.

Avalanche Danger Scale and Advisory:

Below Tree Line: Moderate

Tree Line: Condsiderable

Alpine: High

High amounts of steady wind and snow over the past 12 hrs have increased the likelyhood of natural and skier triggered avalanches. Wind transport of snow (cornices and snow drifts) will be present and frequent in both south and north faces. Be aware that even on-resort terrain might be prone to avalanches on steeper and open faces. Expect sluffing on steeper terrain and avoid passing under chutes/avalanche paths.    Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Wednesday 13th February 2008, 9:07am
Weather conditions: Overcast and snowing at 4cm/hour
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --

Yesterday the snow started to hit hard from late afternoon with a combination of strong wind overnight.

This morning there is 40cm-50cm of fresh dry powder sitting at the valley level with the forecast showing no signs of it letting up until Friday. The snow is currently falling at a rate of 4cm/hour. This means the snow brought from this storm (HST) is expected to be around 1.5m bu Friday morning.

High winds are expected around noon today, easing towards the afternoon and expected to be calm tomorrow.

Th outlook for the weekend is for sunny & cloudy weather, which means on piste riding conditions will be some of the best this season so far.

Backcountry Advisory
This new storm is loading large amounts of fresh snow on already weak layers. There was also some sun crust and wind slab present directly under the new snow which may cause sluffing in steeper terrain. There will be so much powder on piste over the next few days, keeping close to the resort may be the best option.

Avalanche Hazard:
Alpine: Considerable
Tree Line: Considerable
Below Tree line: Moderate   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Wednesday 13th February 2008, 9:31am
Weather conditions: Snow, strong winds
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Blizzard! It's blizzard-like conditions this morning in Shiga Kogen with a lot of new snow and some strong blowy winds making conditions out there only for the brave! Some of the resorts are seeing an increase of about 30cm in snow depth since yesterday, and there was about that much on the car this morning.... though with the winds blowing it is hard to say exactly how much there has been.

Just look at those temperatures as well. -17C in Ichinose Family and most regions showing temperatures down in the minus double figures and more than a few -15 or colder. Now that is cold!!

The current conditions out there is affecting resort operations with a fair number of lifts waiting for conditions to improve to start moving. So if you are venturing out there in these conditions, be prepared for limited operations. The forecast is for these weather conditions to continue through the day, but things might change....

Nighta is planned at the following resort areas of Shiga Kogen today:

- Nishitateyama (upper)
- Ichinose Family
- Ichinose Diamond   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Wednesday 13th February 2008, 9:47am
Weather conditions: White out - almost blizzard
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Rather a lot of snow on the ground this morning, it goes up past the ankles, past the shins and past the knees... in places it was chilling the thigh. The wind is raging though and drifting snow making it troublesome to climb out of doorways and get in to cars.

All gondolas at Naeba are closed including the Kagura area (only the Mitsumata part of Kagura is open today). The snow is still falling in the village and there is the occasional bright spell - as opposed to general white out - the main Naeba hill is nowhere to be seen for example.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Wednesday 13th February 2008, 11:38am
Weather conditions: snowing, poor visability, windchill on minus 30
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was a powder day. The 20cm of fresh reported here was a bit of an understatement, with more like 30+ on the grommed runs. The morning runs yesterday were some of the smoothest powder runs for the season because it was 30cm on top of smooth groomers. In non-groomed areas it was a bit icy and scratchy underneath, but hopefully more snow will fix that.

It continued snowing through till lunchtime yesterday and then started again this morning. Today we have strong winds coming late in the afternoon bringing heavy snowfalls. Wind speeds of 50kmph plus are expected later today and tomorrow. Temperatures are very cold out there today. The snow falling today and tomorrow is forecast to be the lightest and driest of the season so far.

If you are looking for some traditional Japanese theatre don't forget the free performance of Kanashibetsu Thursday night. Book at the Tourist Centre at the bottom on the Kitanomine Gondola.

Yuzawa Now!

Wednesday 13th February 2008, 12:44pm
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's a cold -3 at the moment in Yuzawa.

Not quite as much snow as we were expecting - probably about 20cm or so on the tops of cars - though the fairly strong winds are blowing it all around and so it is hard to say how much has fallen. Strong winds also mean that only the Mitsumata area of Kagura is open today (so you can't enjoy the reported 40cm of new snow up at Kagura) and the GALA Yuzawa resort is closed. Lifts at other resorts may also be affected by the winds.

In the last few hours the snow hasn't really been falling that much here in town, and not falling at the moment with some breaks in the clouds at times... almost sunny. But the forecast is for snow all day and also all of tomorrow and so it seems unlikely that things are clearing up at the moment.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Wednesday 13th February 2008, 21:53pm
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
I'm back with the snow depth updates. Today was a mixed bag on the mountain, strong winds, heavy snow and poor visibility this morning, improving in the afternoon. The powder was great everywhere though, it would be very difficult to complain about today.

Apparently this front is the best yet this century! (even though thats only 8 years) It is snowing heavily now and we are expecting a lot of snow over the next week.   Read more ...
