Yuzawa Now!

Tuesday 13th March 2018, 6:31am
Weather conditions: Clear and fine
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: --
After a slow and cloudy kind of start to the day, with some very very light snow falling in places at times, yesterday afternoon ended up being a real beauty. Beautiful clear blue skies and sunshine, and while it was mild it didn’t warm up too much.

This morning it’s clear and sunny from the get go.

And it’s going to be warming up. The local forecasts show a high of around 15C this afternoon… and getting warmer still tomorrow.

T-shirt skiing weather almost, with a good chance of three days of fine settled weather to enjoy starting from today. The only worry is how much snow is going to be melting in the warmth...

Got to just get out and make the most of it.

Please note that some of the Now reports on SnowJapan may appear late over the next few days.

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Tuesday 13th March 2018, 6:40am
Weather conditions: Going to be a fine day
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: --
Good morning from Nozawa.

Yesterday the clouds cleared, and the afternoon was a stunning blue sky one. Fantastic views from up on the mountain. Fresh snow may be preferred, but you can’t complain much when you are standing up there and just taking it all in. Fantastic.

This morning the sun is out and it’s going to be fine and clear weather again. And indeed, lots of sunshine for the next few days if the forecasts are correct with warmth, sunshine and settled conditions likely through Thursday.

Nozawa Onsen plans to open until the end of Golden Week on Sunday 6th May.

Please note that some of the Now reports on SnowJapan may appear late over the next few days.

Naeba Now!

Tuesday 13th March 2018, 6:49am
Weather conditions: Bluebird
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: --
Good morning from Naeba.

It's shaping up to be a bright morning here, with the sun just peeping over the adjacent mountain tops. There is no wind, and the air temperature is set to push up as high as 11°C at the base today. The snow will be very spring like today, and it will be a great day to top up your goggle tan!

Looking forwards, we have a settled week ahead, with this area of high pressure sticking around over the Mikuni Valley. Things aren't set to change until Friday, when a block of moist air will move in from the north west, bringing with it a little precipitation. Once this has cleared on Sunday, we will be back to the clear weather, however the air temperature is expected to be a little fresher.   Read more ...

Madarao Now!

Tuesday 13th March 2018, 6:54am
Weather conditions: Clear blue skies over the region
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: --
There was still some cloud around at lunchtime yesterday, but an increasing amount of blue sky and the sun shining through the clouds. By early afternoon though the clouds have for the most part disappeared and we were left with a beautiful spring feeling afternoon.

It was clear overnight, and this morning is starting off clear.

The next three days are going to be all about sun and increasing warmth. Warmer than we would like especially as it keeps on increasing through into Thursday but the next few will be really nice days for enjoying some spring skiing or snowboarding. I expect to see some t-shirt weather folk this week.

Friday: getting colder again with what seems like a bit of rain/snow there on the forecast. Let’s see how that develops over the next few days.

Hakuba Now!

Tuesday 13th March 2018, 6:55am
Weather conditions: Clear
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: --
Early morning report this morning.

It was such a beautiful day yesterday. I had a busy day planned but I just couldn’t resist going out for just two hours late afternoon. And even though I didn’t have much time I had to stop and sit down to just look and soak it all in. What a beautiful place to be live.

Anyway, the whole region is going to be enjoying more clear skies and sunshine over the next few days – along with increasing temperatures. Thursday in particular is going to be... toasty (highs up to 15C in the village?)

Would we prefer more fresh snow and mid-winter snow conditions? Obviously. But if it is similar to yesterday, I highly recommend getting out over the next few.

(Is that a chance of some snow into the weekend at higher elevations? We'd like some of that if possible!)

Hope you can be here to enjoy this.

Weather conditions: Fine clear skies
New snowfall: 0cm

Good morning from Shiga Kogen.

I have to get the report up early this morning and luckily it's a simple one.

I don’t have much to report this morning other than these lovely clear and sunny skies above us and the fact that the next few days appears to be much of the same... just getting a little warmer each day.

Things should be cooling down again on Friday and it even seems there may be a chance of some fresh snowfall going into the coming weekend. And that would be nice.

Please note that some of the Now reports on SnowJapan may appear late over the next few days.

Niseko Now!

Tuesday 13th March 2018, 8:00am
Weather conditions: Cloudy overcast
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: --
Good morning.

It's cloudy this morning and no fresh snow to report. Chilly but due to be mild. There's some wind too.

The forecasts seem to be showing the chance of some mixed weather conditions that might include some light rain at times over the next couple of days, and hopefully some snow come Friday.

We might all be resigning ourselves into accepting that we are totally into spring now, but it's really pleasing to still see Hirafu reporting an impressive 5m of snow on the upper slopes. So there is still a lot out of snow out there and skiing until the planned closing at the end of Golden Week in early May will not be a problem. That gives us quite a long while yet to enjoy this last section of the season.

I need to get this report up and so can't wait for the opening info.

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base 6am: -2℃, no snowfall. Moiwa800m: -5℃, E2.6m/s, no snowfall, foggy. Annupuri1150m: -8℃, WSW15m/s, low visibility, no snowfall. Hirafu peak: -10℃, strong wind, bad visibility, no snowfall. Benkei cape: S4m/s, Kamui cape S18m/s, 1013hPa, 1.5m waves.

Strong SW wind, poor visibility with no snowfall above 1100m elevation. The slopes are frozen this morning but will thaw as the warm air mass flows in during the day. Cracks are forming and many glide avalanches are occurring in low elevation south facing steep/cliff slopes. Glide avalanches are also expected to occur in south facing steep slopes and cornice slopes in higher elevation. Better stay away from valley bottoms in order to avoid being swept by avalanches.

Gates opening is undecided. Please respect the patrol’s decision. The light is weak & flat making the slope’s undulation difficult to notice. Snowbridges are also becoming weak. Falling into swelling creeks is very dangerous. Please remain vigilant in all areas including tree runs. The mountain is shifting to Spring, but still a huge amount of snow. Have a nice day.

Myoko Now!

Tuesday 13th March 2018, 9:23am
Weather conditions: Clear, with some high haze
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: --
Just as predicted, a sunny day in Myoko today.

Got cold enough overnight, though, with the meltwater from yesterday nicely frozen in the street this morning. That’s not going to hold, though, as all of Japan looks to be in a warm spring mood. That’s good for skiing, too; word is that it was really icy high up on the peaks, and that fresh snow yesterday didn’t make it easy to make turns. The snow is very settled here at base, though, so if that nice solid snow warms up we could enjoy some corn snow skiing.

And it will be fun on the piste as well, of course, if a bit sticky and soft here and there.

Geto Kogen Now!

Tuesday 13th March 2018, 9:34am
Weather conditions: Clear and sunny
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: --
Mainly cloudy on the mountain yesterday and we were treated to some light snow from about lunchtime (accounting for the number in the report today), clearing in the evening with tops of 3C. From all reports, the snow was a little slow no doubt due to the mixed conditions we’ve seen lately.

Today, mainly clear and sunny skies ahead with winds starting light and increasing to strong in the evening. We should see tops of 9C at the bottom and 5C at the top.

Reading ahead on the forecast yesterday there looked like there was going to be some snow coming our way around Friday, though looking on it now it seems to have done a Houdini, nowhere in sight. This is partially good news however as with the temps we’re seeing lately, there was a pretty high chance it was going to fall a little wetter... i.e. rain. This is why we look at a 3 day forecast in my reports, as it really can change overnight, so here goes…

Wednesday: some light rain showers, strong winds & tops of 8C
Thursday: mostly sunny with some afternoon rain showers, moderate winds easing & tops of 12C
Friday: light snow, light winds & tops of 3C

Minakami has warmed right up here today with blue skies, no wind, it's sunglasses and t-shirt weather outside and haven't been on the mountain for a while but heard things softened up nicely. It is quite literally BBQ weather as per today's photo.

The Spring corn season is upon us for the next few days and I've never seen such a disappointing March in terms of snow. Not one big dump this month after what was a great Winter.

The forecast is for things to cool off again come Friday and remain a little above zero up at 1500m over the weekend.
