Furano Now!

Tuesday 14th December 2010, 9:24am
Weather conditions: snowing lightly
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There were some nice smiles and proclamations of a great powder day yesterday! Temperatures rose in the evening and there was melt on the roads last night. These warmer temperatures are persisting and the solid ice base around the village has turned to slush and a constant dripping can be heard from roofs as you walk along the streets. The temparature at the resort base is +2 and at the top is -2. The good news is that is has been snowing since early morning. This time the snow has a high moisture content, which usually is not welcome, however this wet heavy snow is excellent for bulking up the base of the resort. It looks like temperatures will fall again by this afternoon and more snow is on the way during the week.    Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Tuesday 14th December 2010, 9:35am
Weather conditions: Partly cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow forecast yesterday didn't eventuate and temps did get a little above freezing at the base. The good news though is that the system that moved across Honshu and brought quite a bit of rain down that way moved to the east of us so thankfully no rain here. This morning only got slightly below freezing and already it is slightly above but as the low pressure system moves to the NE of Hokkaido later today cold air should start moving over the region and plenty of snow should accompany it.
The next few of days will be very cold with plenty of powder expected to fall. Snow is expected throughout the outlook into next week. Hopefully a fair portion of the mountian will be skiable by the weekend.

Hakuba Now!

Tuesday 14th December 2010, 10:13am
Weather conditions: Cloudy, rain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It rained all last night here in the Hakuba valley, from about 6:00PM until 7:00AM. The lower slopes of all the resorts are pretty much devoid of snow, however you can still ski on the upper slopes of most of the main resorts, see below.

Expect wet and heavy snow, some icy patches and exposed areas on the runs that are open and be aware that a shallow snowpack had lots of hazards both visible and under the snow.

We are looking forward to tomorrow when it is expected to snow again in the valley, not a lot is called for but any cold temperatures are more than welcome!

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Tuesday 14th December 2010, 10:16am
Weather conditions: Overcast skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Probably a good day to stay in bed today
It was raining overnight in the Village and looks like they got some up top too
So snow depth has dropped back a bit too
Both the Yamabiko lifts are running today but the Uenodaira 4 Lift is not open today

There was still decent enough snow up top yesterday to have a slide but did get a bit sticky
So we are in need of some fresh snow soon
Hopefully wont have to wait too long with a good amount due over the next few days starting from tonight
Should set the resort up for a good weekend coming

This season Nozawa Onsen resort is also running a few cool contests
Can win a trip to our sister city St Anton in Austria or more exciting a Season Pass for 100 Years
So can ski for the rest of your life for free
Sounds like a plan, just need to fill out the entry on the back of your lift ticket and put it in the entry box

Courses open:

Yamabiko courses A
Yamabiko course C
Yamabiko course D
Yamabiko course E

Naeba Now!

Weather conditions: Cloud, rain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Well, not the best of things to report today. It's a bit of a wet day unfortunately, and definitely not cold enough - or should I say, as cold as we want it to be.

Kagura was reporting light snow this morning but I would guess that if anything is falling up there right now it is rain like it is down at village level, though at times it is easing off so hopefully the rain might stop annoying us soon!

It is right now about 5 degrees in the village area and perhaps about +2 up on the mountain.

Where's this cold snap we were promised you ask? I want to know the answer to that myself. Things do still look set to get colder tomorrow, especially at higher elevations, but the big dump we were hoping for doesn't seem to be on the cards any more. Not in the next few days anyway. There will still very likely be snow falling, and lets hope as much as possible, but it has eased away from that forecast of heavy snow to something more moderate.

I'll fill you in with the latest tomorrow.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Tuesday 14th December 2010, 13:28pm
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Last night wasn't much fun. Cold rain falling in Shiga Kogen. Hopefully we won't see much rain from now until April. It did turn into snow early on this morning though and it has been snowing lightly in the highlands. It's pretty wet snow and not a huge amount accummulating on the ground, but snow all the same and certainly better than rain.

We should see snowy conditions continue today and into tomorrow. It's not looking like we'll get 'heavy snow' though, unfortunately, and the cold snowy front that we were all looking forward to this week seems to have fizzled out somewhat. So a few days of snow showers and clearer weather on the cards, though it still looks like it will be cold on the mountain over the next few.

It seems that Okushiga Kogen is closed today as the snow that was there has decreased due to the rain of last night.

Lifts currently operating in the different resort areas of Shiga Kogen:

Sun Valley:
1 lift

1 lift

Ichinose Family:
2 lifts

Ichinose Diamond:
1 lift

2 lifts

2 lifts

Yuzawa Now!

Tuesday 14th December 2010, 13:33pm
Weather conditions: Heavy rain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
And heavy rain it was. Last night there were some really strong noisy winds blowing about and heavy rain falling, even at higher elevations unfortunately.

Earlier this morning that had turned into light snow up there but I would guess it is rain again now. Down at town level it has been raining heavily since earlier this morning and the mountains are pretty much totally shrouded in cloud. There doesn't seem much hope of it turning to snow very quickly as it is just too warm - right now about 9 degrees in town.

That should start dropping later on this afternoon, overnight and into tomorrow so we are all fingers crossed that it will drop enough to bring snowfall.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Tuesday 14th December 2010, 14:16pm
Weather conditions: Clouds but patches of blue
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Some really heavy rain yesterday and although we had a bit of snow up high, the temperatures were too warm and it got pretty wet at the top.

Today is mild too but with a bit of luck the temperatures will drop this afternoon and there is a high chance of snow tonight and tomorrow, with the possibility of snow showers throughout the rest of the week. Please let it be so!   Read more ...

Zao Now!

Tuesday 14th December 2010, 15:52pm
Weather conditions: Cloud, rain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's not the best of things to report today. We were hoping for snow but we got rain, and although I haven't been up there and can't see from here (as the mountain is shrouded in cloud/fog), apparently the top of the resort area is also now snowless and I can certainly believe that.

It is uncharacteristically warm still, though since this morning when it was around 6 degrees in the village it has chilled somewhat and we can this time be confident of snow overnight. Hopefully! Perhaps 20cm or so as well up top into tomorrow. So things are looking much better for me to be able to bring you some happier news later on tomorrow.   Read more ...
